Recently watched Kim Malone Scott 's talk about radical candor and feedback. I'm a huge advocate of giving and receiving feedback even if it is a hard thing to do, so Kim's talk stood out to me. In her book and talk, she talked about following framework (photo). The vertical axis is "Care Personally" or how Kim called it: "giving a damn axis." The horizontal axis is "Challenge Directly" or: "willing to piss people off." The ideal quadrant to be in is radical candor where people around you, including your manager, are willing to communicate feedback directly to you because they care. The second best is obnoxious aggression, where you still get feedback, but the person giving it might not necessarily care much about you. The other two quadrants are less ideal since you won't be getting any feedback regardless if the other party cares or doesn't care about you. What are your thoughts about giving feedback? And how do you like to give or receive feedback? Comment below.
