I cannot watch the video of George Floyd's murder. I remember the day in July of 2016, almost two months after I returned to the U.S. from Kenya, that I watched the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile by police, and how I sobbed viewing them. I remember how panicked I felt. I had returned "home” to witness up close why Black lives don't matter in America. Those images seared through my brain like a hot poker. I did watch the video of the white woman in Central Park calling the police to report that a bird-watching Black man was threatening her. The clinical calculation of her tactic, the way she KNEW that saying her "perpetrator" was Black would get a police response, was nauseating. I KNOW what watching the murder of George Floyd would unleash in my mind. Maybe one day I'll have the courage to deal with it. But between #coronavirus and everything else Life has tossed my way, I cannot make room for it now. All I can do is continue to pray for the mothers of Black sons. And for all Black people in America.
