For #ThrowbackThursday , I'm remembering the history lesson I received on July 4th, 2018, from the legend herself, Edna Adan Ismail . I still get chills recalling her stories of growing up in #Hargeisa #Somaliland with her beloved father Adan Ismail, moving to London to train as a nurse and a midwife, marrying the man who would become Prime Minister, losing everything during the brutal war years, becoming her country's first female Foreign Minister, returning home after retirement to build a maternity hospital. Viewing her photo albums, realizing that she was probably the one of first women of African descent to be feted at a White House State Dinner, I was filled with awe. Her grace, poise and charm overwhelms you, but her fierce intellect, strength and determination empowers you. My life has been changed in the year since I met The Mother of Somaliland. She is the Mother, Mentor and Role Model that everyone should be so blessed to have.
