When I first heard that schoolgirls in Western #Kenya were being required to undergo mandatory tests for female genital mutilation and pregnancy, I was reminded once again why my voice does not belong only to me. It belongs to women and girls everywhere, because so many of them have no say in what happens to them. I lived in Kenya for 8 years, so Kenyan schoolgirls aren't just exotic concepts to me. The fact that so many who've survived the incredible trauma of #FGM and sexual abuse will be forced to endure these invasive, humiliating examinations just breaks my heart. I acknowledge the stated attempt to measure the scope of the problems. But why isn't there more effort to investigate and humiliate the people who torture and exploit these young girls? Why aren't there stricter laws to punish people who support and perform FGM, and who rape young girls? Why do #womenandgirls always have to bear the brunt of the shame and ostracism that flows from the violence committed against them? While I have a voice, I'll keep asking these questions.
