Exactly one year ago today, I was sitting in a session on how to improve your freelancing prospects at the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) 2017 Fall Camp when I received a LinkedIn email from a woman in the U.K. named Thoko Elphick-Pooley . As Director of Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases , Thoko needed media outreach support to journalists ahead of the release of Uniting's annual report on #NTD elimination and treatment progress. Five months later, I had traveled to Tokyo, Japan with Thoko and the Uniting team, for the Universal Health Coverage conference. I helped share information about NTDs with journalists on five continents. I grasped the urgent importance of eliminating the needless suffering from NTDs for more than a billion people, and about how NTD treatment strategies signal the viable pathway to Universal Health Coverage worldwide. My Uniting consultancy deepened my resolve to herald #globalhealth and #globaldevelopment issues throughout the rest of my career.
