Still processing the incredible privilege and joy of watching Jemele Hill give the keynote speech last night at #JAWSCamp18 . Her remarkable journey as a woman and a journalist is surpassed only by her astonishing authenticity. Those of us who know and love her best can only marvel at how real, honest, and totally comfortable in her own skin she is. I was beyond honored to hear her say that I was one of her first mentors, but what’s even more exciting is that Jemele somehow finds time in her insanely busy life to give that energy back. Watching her interact with the star struck young journalists last night reminded me of how important it is to give young women access to mentors and the chance to believe that one day they can achieve their goals. I couldn’t have known that witty, spunky, vibrant, talented 16 year old girl from Mumford High School in #Detroit would one day speak truth to power about the leader of the free world, or host a TV show or write for The Atlantic .
