Who is Responsible For Our Old People? While riding public transit today I ran across this elderly man who was displaying clear signs of dementia and appeared disheveled. He posed no risk to himself or others. Not sure if he was on his way to or from somewhere. Not sure if anyone wondered when he’d arrive or worried if he didn’t show up. He seemed utterly alone, which seems painful given his senior years and confused state. Maybe we don’t (collectively) care...but somehow it struck a sad cord in my heart as I watched him point to no one and talk to no one. At one point in time, he was someone’s child and might be someone’s father. Where are people like this supposed to live? Who is supposed to help them. Where is our humanity—and even absent that—where is our infrastructure which should exist in a democratic society which holds that all people are created equal and deserves compassion? …see more
