As the 2017 Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) Conference and Mentoring Project comes to a close, I'm overwhelmed by emotions and inspiration. This year's Camp fueled me in a surprisingly welcome way. Three incredibly dynamic young African American women journalists have achieved extraordinary success by using their skills and passion to empower others. Keynote speaker Nikole Hannah-Jones gave a moving description of her journey in a profession where she was told repeatedly that she didn't belong. She's now a staff writer for The New York Times Magazine and a 2017 MacArthur Genius Grant Recipient. She has also launched the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting, which provides training support for women journalists of color. Award winning @KQED journalist Tonya Mosley Benjamin teamed with NYT OpEd Editor Jenee Desmond-Harris for an impressive, exhilarating conversation about how bias affects our worldview and our reporting.
