One year ago, I moved to the City of Charlotte , North Carolina, after spending nearly nine years living in East #Africa training and mentoring young journalists. I expected to decompress while soaking up plenty of Southern charm and hospitality, at a less than hectic pace. A month later, Charlotte made national headlines following yet another police-related shooting death. A year later, I barely recognize the country I left in 2007. And I think a lot about what home meant to me a decade ago--and what it means now. I realize that I have spent a lot of my life and career fighting to be free, committing myself only to my career passions...writing, mentoring, communicating.  No postal code, mortgage, or relationship was strong enough to tie me down. After a year back in America, too often I still find myself looking back over my shoulder, longing for the adventure and broadened horizons of expat life. But now, I think it may be time to commit...to myself, to my writing, to this #QueenCity.
