I've worked at companies where annual rewards letters were literally black/white one pagers with nothing more than "Hello $REPLACEABLE_COG <barf spread sheet>". Seeing my PayPal rewards letter, I am very grateful for the nice template, compensation recap, breakdown, explanation of pay, yearly message from Dan, and thank you from my boss. A lot of thought and work from actual humans went into the template to make the rewards letter easy for our employees to understand, to provide explanation and resources, and to personalize the message as much as possible with gratitude and empathy. Words, kindness, empathy and personalization MATTER - especially in a time of virtual work when folks are not personally connected. These are the little things that say "we care".
