Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg were asked whether social media is "addictive" by Senator Lindsey Graham today. Their answers were both correct but will also be widely misconstrued and misunderstood. Social media, like any other analgesic, is potentially addictive, but only to a small portion of the population, as is the case with alcohol and compulsive gambling. Addiction is more complex than just the product being abused and requires smart legislation to help people struggling with the pathology of addiction. Addiction is not the same thing as distraction.
