When I was clinically obese, I wanted nothing more than to blame McDonald’s or other fast-food brands. I wanted to blame Mars, Coca-Cola, Nestle, and the entire unhealthy food industry. I wanted to blame them for my health. But as tempting as that was, the food these companies made was not the real reason I was overweight. I was obese because I was eating my feelings. When I was bored, I would eat. When I was lonely, I would eat. When I felt guilty for overeating, I would eat. Behind all of my overeating was a desire to escape. And this desire to escape is crucial to understanding the roots of distraction. Distraction is always about a desire to escape discomfort. Instead of thinking that we’re addicted to food or technology and thinking that there’s nothing to do about it, we can use these uncomfortable emotions to motivate ourselves toward traction rather than distraction. Only by being honest and open about our problems can we begin to address them.
