I’ve tried a digital detox before. When I was working on my second book, Indistractable, I got rid of all my gadgets. I thought that if I just got rid of my distracting devices, I’d be able to complete every task with ease. And it worked! ...who am I kidding? Of course it didn’t. When I got rid of my devices, I’d have other thoughts that would pop into my head 👇 • I’d look at my shelf and think, “Oh, there’s that book I’ve been meaning to finish” • I’d reorganize my desk over and over again • I’d find chores around the house that seemingly couldn’t wait I kept finding distractions. And this is when I realized something incredibly important: Distraction starts from within. If you can’t sit with your family for an hour without looking at your cell phone, I got a newsflash for you: It’s not a cell phone that’s the problem. The first step to dealing with distraction is to master internal triggers like loneliness, boredom, stress, and other uncomfortable emotions that can drive us to distraction.
