A new technique based on deep learning can shorten some brain surgeries. During brain cancer operations, surgeons must stop in mid-operation for up to half an hour while they send the tissue to the lab where a pathologist analyzes it. A new test powered by deep learning does the same but within the operating room, with spectroscopy, and in only a few minutes. They trained the network to recognize 13 cancer types that account for around 90 percent of observed brain tumors and measured its performance in a clinical trial (the first trial of a deep learning application in the operating room, they said).
