Unemployment caused my disability and I desperately wish more people understood the debilitating consequences of burnout before it's too late... The stress of not knowing where your next meal will come from, how to keep the heat on, forgetting the taste of fresh produce living off of canned goods, and the other added pressures of caring for a newborn... When I lost my vision from severe optic neuritis I was scared, but when I lost my ability to walk I was absolutely hopeless. How would anyone want to hire me like this? Was my professional career completely over at 25?! Stress devoured my immune system. I'll never be the same... but I count my blessings habitually! Eternally grateful to have recovered my sight in one eye and humbled by the mobility challenges. But it's all a little too late and there's no cure. So if you're reading this, PROMISE me one thing... The next time you become overwhelmed by external pressures, pause and breathe. Prioritize yourself because we are delicate creatures.
