The Angry Birds movies made $506M at the box office. It was a big bet for Rovio. In 2012 they were struggling to compete with other free-to-play mobile games. The year before they had to lay off over 200 employees. Then the movies hit live theaters. It was an instant success. Every kid across the US instantly knew about Angry Birds. And was demanding to play the game on their parents phones. But it didn’t stop there. Soon after the film, Rovio started creating physical merch. Ranging from jackets all the way to plushies. It was another huge success. By creating a whole world around the game, Rovio saved their business. Sometimes in marketing you need to make big bets.
