I never wanted to be seen as a black entrepreneur. I never wanted race to be a part of my story. I just wanted to be an entrepreneur. I didn't want to be the best "black" entrepreneur. I wanted to be the best. The older I get... the more I see the flaw in that thinking. The more evil that comes to light... the more I change. The older I get, the more I realize that it is my responsibility to embrace everything that I am. For all of the others like me growing up with crap circumstances & hearing things like: "Odds are you'll be in jail." "You'll be making minimum wage your whole life." "Don't be angry... you might scare people." Growing up, seeing people cross the street when they see you coming. People refusing to shake your hand. Wondering if your life is in danger because of the color of your skin. I have been a full-time entrepreneur for coming on 4 years. I'm praised for doing cool things. For being an amazing person. And yet I've neglected this. I am so proud to be who I am. To be where I'm from. To be what I am.
