But nobody wanted to see him. The audience wanted the bands or the headlining acts.  Steve Martin was opening to packed stadiums but building zero audience and going nowhere.  So he started renting out smaller venues and made himself the headliner.  He created his venue. He created his audience bit by bit. He eventually filled stadiums.
