Garry Kasparov makes Twitter look good: "Our technology advances at the speed of Moore's Law. Our political processes, more like Parkinson's Law..." @Kasparov63 is one of the sanest and wisest voices online. Here's his latest column in the Economist (paywalled unfortunately). [BTW. Paywalls are an anathema for journalists -- they for cut you off from the Internet's greatest gift -- access to global distribution for free. The Second Law of Online Media states: Content is infinitely scalable. Others will carry it and evangelize it. But that won't happen with a paywall. Google and Facebook don't have paywalls -- yet they advise newspaper and magazine publishers to build paywalls(!) which means that the publishers cut themselves off from the single best thing about the Internet -- instant distribution at global scale. It doesn't make sense. Paywalls will hasten the disruption in the media industry. ] …see more

You’ve heard of virtual reality and augmented reality but have you heard of parallel reality? The wonderfully named Misapplied Sciences, Inc. has developed the ability of different people looking at the same monitor to only see information relevant to them. This pretty cool concept is going to be tested by Delta Air Lines in Detroit so if you’re flying in our out of there later this year, check it out. By the way, Delta is the only domestic airline I've heard of that is working on its brand by trying to improve all aspects of air travel. #deltaairlines #parallelreality #misappliedscience #brand …see more
One of the key ways for families to build intergenerational wealth is via real estate. But on top of slavery and Jim Crow, there was red-lining by banks and real estate covenants that kept African Americans from being able to tap into that. This post by Ben Thompson at Stratechery does a solid job of knitting together how those business practices, in large part but by no means solely, created the situation America finds itself in today with regard to the systemic opression of black Americans. Keep in mind, the post only focuses on one city - Madison, Wisconsin. But it happened in every city, all across America. #race #banking #blacklivesmatter #dobetter …see more
This is pretty amazing and something I thought was still years away. Singapore has approved lab-grown chicken from Eat Just, Inc. for sale as an ingredient. The first-ever meat sold that didn't come as a result of killing an actual animal. This is, of course, different than meat substitutes like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat in that Eat Just is selling actual meat. It will be fun to watch this industry grows as other companies are currently taking on growing seafood and beef. #eatjust #beyondmeat #labgrownmeat #chicken #futurefood #impossiblefoods #bioscience …see more
It might seem surprising to see a co-founder who sold his business buy it back. But to me this makes all the sense in the world. When ZICO Beverages, LLC was sold to The Coca-Cola Company it became just another product line. Odds were high that it would eventually shuttered (which it was announced to be 3 months ago). But by buying it back, Mark Rampolla and his team can not only give it the focus it needs for long-term success and expand the product line base the core brand, but they are tapping into the tidal shift toward plant-based diets at the right time too. Nicely done. h/t 👋 Adam Leidhecker #zico #coconutwater #plantbased #cocacola #thecocacolacompany #business #businessstrategy #branding …see more

Congratulations to the left-brained Mark J. Feldman on his new role at Building Engines, Inc. ! None of us know how the net neutrality issue is going to play out yet, but at the very least we can assume that brands with scale and clout are likely to do better in a deregulated provider space than those who lack that level of influence. Which begs the question – as consumers detox from social media addiction, and the over-supply of channels and content we have had to date looks set to consolidate, how does your brand intend to stay in touch? Are you looking at a community strategy for example, or are you opting to be an ecosystem? Will you partner, diversify, license or concentrate? How are you planning to keep people’s attention and focus? …see more
"What marketing concept do you wish you had invented? Mark Ritson : Net promoter score. Every over-trained marketing academic despises it because it is so simple and is used by pretty much every major company. Its simplicity and its difficulty and its centrality make it fantastic. And because academics hate it, I love it more." …see more
“In a recent SiriusDecisions survey of more than 100 brand leaders at #B2B companies, 84% felt they had some documented brand purpose at their company. However, when we asked how they actually express #brand purpose, a very different picture emerged. Although significantly more than 50% promoted their brand purpose in #marketing campaigns, published it on their website, and included it in employee training, well below 40% put this into action by supporting external organization aligned to the brand or through ethical sourcing policies informed by their brand purpose. Clearly, it’s a challenge for most B2B companies to live up to their values.” Link below …see more
