Advertising is weird right now. There seems to be this false dilemma predicated on the failed group-think that suggests that's what’s old & has been shown to work for decades, somehow doesn't now, and what's new and hasn't really been figured out yet, does.

Two weeks ago, I wrote a viral essay on LinkedIn, which said that due to the Coronavirus's devastating effect on the city, NYC as we know it is dead, forever. A few days later, I woke up to find that the piece had received intense criticism from the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, who penned an op-ed against me in the NYTimes, Mark Cuban , and even the mayor himself Bill DeBlasio—as well as millions of others. While I included lots of factual data to back up my proclamation, outlining everything from the city's current real-estate crisis to a rise in unemployment and loss of culture, many were quick to assume I merely had given up on New York City altogether. This is far from the truth! Watch this video to learn more about why I wrote this piece, what that crazy experience was like, and what I believe needs to happen to save the New York City I can assure you I love so dearly. I dropped out of college. I bought a car with the money instead. And then when I saw everyone walking around campus I got jealous, returned the car, cancelled the check, and re-enrolled in college. A day later, I met my first mentor (first of about 10 — and then 100s if I include the many wonderful people I have learned from along the way). My first mentor was a professor. His courses were useless. I never used them for anything. And then I had to take remedial classes when I had a job to re-learn all the things I failed to learn in school. But I learned from this professor things that were invaluable to later success: building businesses, helping others, writing books, giving talks, making an impact. [Our life worth is not our net worth but the impact we have on others. This is what I learned from him.] But let me reel it back a little. Because I studied this man and emulated him for decades.  http://ow.ly/4qbW30itiPu …see more

For a founder, #funding and #dilution are never far from his/her mind. Juggling between the aspiration to build a large company and fear of losing ownership and control, is a constant dilemma. Since we can't have it all, what would you choose? 1. 60% of a 100 million dollar company 2. 6% of a billion dollar company

I remember when @jeffbezos was not considered so cool or fun. “I wanted a woman who could get me out of a third-world prison” Jeff said about his wife, good idea, that is not something one sees in a matrimonial ad. A fun read.

We have prioritization in Digital Transformation wrong. We rightly start with projects that are easy and make a big difference, but then move to easy, but pointless, rather than transformative, but hard. This explains why your bank is build on code from the 1950's but has a Pepper Robot in one branch, while changing your flight on BA takes a phone call and 10 mins with the repricing department, but you can order food on an app in the lounge. It explains why retailers have no idea where their inventory is in real time, but there is a new AR app to try on sunglasses. We dare not look under the hood into the big deep problems, we build digital garnish to distract from the problems. Our need to look busy, not make a difference holds back progress. The needs of Finance to avoid large Capex, the needs of the CFO to do quarterly reporting, all hamper any progress towards things that matter, …see more

How do you want to be recognized for your accomplishments at work? We all want and need to be seen and valued. To desire praise does not mean that you are egocentric, arrogant nor not a team player. Appreciation for your contributions is integral to being content at work. If you are not recognized in a way that is meaningful to you, identify your specific needs and ask to have them met. #CarsonTate #quote #motivation #productivity #employeeengagement #employee #workplace #WFH #WorkFromHome #womenatwork #womeninbusiness #success #worktogether #workstyle #productivitystyle #businessowner #hustle #positivity #inspiration #balance #productivitycoach #productivitystrategist #dreamjob …see more

Dear LinkedIn community, can you help me with something? In response to a recent article I wrote on the emotional intelligence of Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian, a reader reached out to share her heart-breaking experience: Beverly Dodd said she worked as a Delta Flight Attendant for fifteen years. Beverly loved her job, but retired early to be home full time with her children. Sadly, Beverly's son passed away last year. After taking some time to mourn, she was ready to re-enter the workforce. But Beverly never made it past the interview stage with the 3rd party recruiting agency Delta was using. Beverly's experience is not the first time I've heard of a potentially ideal candidate, specifically one who has valuable training--and invaluable experience--getting weeded out by recruitment management systems, many of which are automated. So, the ask: Can you pls like or comment on this post? Hopefully together we can get Delta's attention. And just maybe give Beverly a chance at getting her job back. #Delta #leadership #management #recruitment #careers #EmotionalIntelligence …see more

One more on Gold: The $2,000 price level has been breached. As noted earlier, this rally is driven in part by investors looking for more risk-mitigating assets given such low yields. I suspect there'll be greater cyclical/structural allocations to gold--both of which are price supportive. #markets #gold #investing #investors …see more

I have a lot of interactions on here that show people are almost without exception really rather brilliant, well intentioned, quirky, honest.....please keep that up. I don't really like the humble brags, the motivational posts, the people telling each other what to do. I really find platitudes hard or people denying the role of luck and promoting the culture of endless hard work and HUSTLE . In fact most of my feed is quite uniform and self congratulatory, or comes from some spending $50 per hour on how to nail Linkedin and following advice. I've no idea what I'm doing here, I have no team, I like asking questions and being myself. Most of all I like listening and asking questions. It seems that works. It seams ears work better than mouths . It seems being compassionate works. So maybe it can work for you. Enough, I'm off to go to meditate, get a series C round finished, have a sauna, Peloton for 2 hours, cleanse my colon and wake at 4am to some fresh goji berry Kombucha with hemp seeds. …see more
