I wanted to update my contretemps w/ my alma mater. I observed, w/ anger and disappointment, that the new Culture of Care plan for fall students didn’t mention mental health, trauma responsiveness or even trauma. It only addressed physical safety, important tho that is. W/ the President copied, the head of mental health services shared the many mental health programs Smith has. She shared recent hires. She shared ongoing connections w/ students during the Covid-gap. Unfortunately, the response was fraught w/ generalities. While it noted trauma training of staff, there was no mention of trauma training for faculty. The response didn’t address why the Culture of Care failed to mention mental health. And the response did not share how they would help students, faculty and staff at the start of the new semester; they didn’t mention a trauma responsive plan or approach. It was typically Smith-like: kind words at beginning and end and self aggrandizement in the middle. Does Smith have nothing to learn about restarting? I wrote back, noting the omissions. Smith has trained women to think well. Being that I’m Smith educated, why do they take me for a fool? Smith’s lack of openness to improvement and its self-satisfaction is pitiful. Ok Washingtonians, here’s a challenge contest for the holidays. Purchase my books at Fabulous Market (on Pennsylvania Ave NW between 24th and 25th Streets) until whole inventory is gone but no later than December 6th. The books are $14 each there. There are 12 books in total at Fabulous. Then, if the rack is empty on December 7th, I will donate 5 books to needy families in DC area for the holidays. And who knows, maybe visitors to DC (staying at the Melrose) will buy some too. Challenge is on. Come on. And reading is the gift that keeps on giving!!!! Just an oddity on this post-Thanksgiving Friday. There are sales galore. Now focus on this: The US government was recently “selling” a fake US university in Detroit to foreign students. And it “looked” real enough that students enrolled and paid thousands. Who knows where the money went. Now, the fake government was a success in trapping some of the student visa fraud. This fake university success occurs as real universities/colleges are failing — and they are desperately trying to get students, domestic or foreign. Is anyone seeing irony here? The fake university enrolls students with ease while the real school admissions officers are struggling? Two thoughts: maybe government is onto a legal way to get new students and isn’t what US did entrapment? One more thought: is setting up a fake university the best use of government talent and resources? If these gov. folks are so talented, why not have them work on real education at real educational institutions in need?
