The goal of media is to be seen by the biggest (fill in your success metric here) audience, and the news business has always been editorialized (rigged, if you will) to benefit the publisher. Think about this...

Mary Jackson never accepted the status quo.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has announced that its HQ will be named after engineer Mary W. Jackson, who overcame barriers to become NASA’s first Black woman engineer. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ Jackson started her NASA career in 1951 in Virginia as a human computer – a mathematician who performed hand calculations for NASA missions. After two years working in the West Area Computing unit, she received an offer to work in Langley’s Supersonic Pressure Tunnel, where she conducted extensive aeronautics research and authored or co-authored over a dozen research papers. She was promoted and, in 1958, became our first Black woman engineer.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ More here: https://lnkd.in/gSFYSJH ⁣ #MaryJackson #BlackinStem #womeninSTEM #nasa …see more

“When you look at the actual research, it turns out that the effect of social media on teen depression is extremely small - 0.36% - which means 99.64% of teen girls’ depressive symptoms aren’t related to social media." A little bit of research goes a long way in my opinion. Don’t listen to the scaremongers - do your own research. Great piece Nir Eyal https://lnkd.in/dNs5hi3 #socialmedia …see more

All those interested in workshops and pedagogy and communications and handling trauma, this piece might be of interest. It details a case study approach -- a different kind of case study -- more like M&Ms in healthcare. Thoughts welcome as always. https://lnkd.in/eGXWzzK …see more

Ok. Now I'm beyond sad, wherever that is. More than 1300 people have visited Lady Lucy Giraffe Auction site and not one person has bid on me. How's that possible? I'm having an identity crisis or some other crisis. Please bid on me. Auction ends Aug. 5th at noon; that's just around the corner. Do gd + feel gd. https://lnkd.in/e-yktvP …see more

Happy Labor Day, recognizing that for many, this is not a holiday but a work day. I just read an article on donations to colleges and universities and how they failed to vet the source of donations — namely from Jeffrey Epstein. The Higher Education Times (a UK publication) said anonymity was an approach although not fully protective. 3 thoughts: 1. How carefully ARE donations actually vetted in real life on campuses? Sure, smaller colleges can vet more, and big donations stand out everywhere as worthy of vetting. But how much money comes in from sources that, if we looked, would be deemed institutionally unacceptable? 2. Cozying up to donors is a big part of fundraising. So didn’t these institutions meet and stay in touch w/ Epstein? Harvard said it isn’t returning the $$ it got. Is that because it was received before convictions? Didn’t Harvard send updates/reports to him? Couldn’t Harvard show some grace and donate an identical amount to fund for his victims? Ok: just return it. 3. Wouldn’t it be easy to fool a college/university as to a donation’s source? Just create layers. Now ask: Is Sackler money being returned or just new $$ not bring taken by educational institutions? I’d say we need to do more thinking about donor source. Honorary Degrees too. …see more

Great talk with some of my students on “ghosting at work”. Some of the things said that would make them stay are the following: respect from superiors (positive communication and transparency in how they take action on the operations of the company); great relationship co-workers; clear understanding of what it takes to move up in the company; flexibility in time scheduling (especially if you’re in school); constructive criticism that helps folks grow. https://lnkd.in/exJNVKG #humanresources #jobpostings #hiringandpromotion #ghosting #millennials …see more
