I want to coin a new term tomorrow: Digital Constipation. It's the idea that the world isn't changing especially fast, but each and every year what is possible get's more amazing, what consumers expect becomes greater, and yet large legacy companies do absolutely nothing because they are scared or unable to change. Digital Constipation is the slow build up of detritus, the old process which won't change, the cultural baggage, the scar tissue of fear, bad memories and poor attitudes. It's this blockage and the tension between what can be done and what is done, which leads to anxiety. It's not the pace of change, it's the ever greater gap, despair and awkwardness for not being contemporary, the jealousy of the smaller companies which get celebrated and the organization rigidity which won't allow adaptation, which creates the pressure on modern large companies.
