With 90% of the top 20 global tech companies in either Western US or Eastern China, why are other regions so far behind? I think concentration of wealth behaves much like gravity - attracting even more capital & talent, making its pull too strong for other smaller ecosystems to match. Even in the wake of the #FlipkartWalmartDeal, I sensed dismay in the ecosystem that India still hasn’t built independent products of global significance. An interesting statistic though, is that 51% of the billion dollar companies in Silicon Valley are founded & run by immigrants, of which 14% are Indians. India is home to a growing ecosystem of outstanding talent pool, entrepreneurs, investors and capital to create companies that create global impact. We had ~5200 tech startups as of 2017, which is expected to grow >2x by 2020, thanks to a burgeoning digital ecosystem. Much of this growth is within fin-tech & healthcare and these sectors alone represent massive opportunities.  We recently published a report that explores the scale of this opportunity - https://goo.gl/99RHnf . Most of the takeaways strengthen Kalaari's commitment to supporting, enabling and influencing tech entrepreneurs in making products and services that solve large scale problems.  https://lnkd.in/fMD34sw …see more

After 10-20 years and countless billions spent, can we now reasonably conclude that every process for innovation has failed? Hackathons, Labs, Idea management software, Sprints, Silicon Valley Safaris, "working with startups", ideation workshops, MVP teams etc. Centers of excellence, countless pitches, competitions, bursaries, internships, initiatives have all accomplished remarkably little. Like pretty much nothing of meaning or real value. Be honest. You don't need a process for innovation. You need a thrusting spirit of unreasonableness, a drive to celebrate impatience, an obsession with feeling proud of what you made happen, a love of the newly possible, an addiction to risk taking, and rejection of ANY form of busy work or bureaucracy. Any form of process is really about merchandizing your role or career or department to others. It's defensive, sanitized time wasting. By all means choose this, but be honest with yourself. …see more

There is a very modern phenomena where many most social people I know spend many more hours alone, but while "alone" are "talking" to ever more people via text, images and comments. There is often a weaving of 50 ongoing threads to 50 people, sometimes in real time, sometimes over months. They are across platforms and media, but rarely in person. This makes you wonder, are these people alone in this state? It's sort of continuous partial presence. Often the conversations are basic and vacuous due to the limitations of the media. Is it awful that this is not face to face or amazing that we can feel connected to so many people, at the same time and always. Would love your thoughts. …see more

Earlier this week, a friend messaged me to let me know I had made a word choice mistake in my latest Forbes article. (Apparently, I had typed “plaque” when I meant to type “plague.”) My reaction? Gratitude. I want every piece of #content I create and share to be of the highest quality, so I appreciated my friend letting me know of my oversight. Contrast that with an experience I had yesterday on Twitter, where someone publicly called out a different error in the same Forbes piece. What was interesting was how he critiqued me, proclaiming in a comment—with a screenshot—that my mistake was so egregious that he “stopped reading this at this sentence” and that he couldn’t “take an article like this seriously, when attention [was] not given to it at the time of writing and production.” My sin? I used the word “is” instead of “if.” Despite feeling angry and embarrassed by what seemed to be an over-the-top reaction, I thanked him for giving me the heads up. Listen, I know I’m not perfect. I know trolls will always exist. But I also know that each of us has a choice in how we communicate on #socialmedia and elsewhere. A gentle reminder to praise in public; critique in private. #communication …see more

Some years ago, I was in a situation where I was being yelled at by a senior executive. It was incredibly tense, stressful, and actually over something I wasn't even involved in - a complete case of bizarre mistaken identity. This wasn't the first time I had been disrespected in the workplace, but something about that day was different, because as soon as this person started yelling, I looked at them and said: "Please lower your voice". Stunned, they stopped for a second, then continued to yell for another several minutes. After they were out of breath, they waited for me to talk. When I said nothing, they asked what I had to say. My response was simply this: "I stopped paying attention when you started to raise your voice. The next conversation we'll have will be with HR in the room." And then I left. They didn't get fired, but they never yelled again. Not at me, anyway. I know I can. So please can people start writing emails and do not use messaging on here. 4) Spend time making emails short. Research people. Make sure you offer them something relevant. Make it clear what you want and what’s in it for them ( if not obvious ) Warning, don’t ever use these addresses to sign people up to newsletters. It’s very rude. …see more

I have no doubts that 2020 will be about artificial intelligence-based solutions becoming mainstream and widely adopted. In this journey, we have an obligation to prove that A.I. is not a threat and is not here to replace what medical professionals do. Instead, it's here to support and augment what they have been doing. I'm also sure I'll have more debates about this than ever before. If there was one single thing that you could claim to be most indirectly and directly responsible for modern woes, it would be the inability of media to make money in any way accept from attention. From fake news to click bait, extreme opinions being normalized, to a refusal to cover the complex or apply nuance, a lot of what's wrong is because media is forced into cheap, fast news not fostering a long term trusted relationship as a balanced information provider. …see more
