The failure of mid end department stores has been inevitable for about 10 years. The only way to thrive in retail is to be at the edge of one or more of these dimensions. Price - Be discount or be premium. Experience - Be super easy and fast, or be an incredible experience. Range - Specialise and offer incredible depth, or be a thin online layer across all inventory in the world. You business fails not because it makes mistakes but because the default position is failure. Every day your company needs to fulfill a role in people's lives. Department stores generally just don't have a reason to exist any more unless you skew to the above. …see more

COVID-19 has caused me to reevaluate my own ego. How could I complain when I still have my job? How could I not continue to accelerate my career when I have all this extra free time from my commute? Why am I not as productive when I have more time for self-care? When I’ve been faced with tough times in the past, I’ve always assumed that I’ll just “figure it out”. But if this experience has taught me anything personally, it’s that if I want to be a good future leader, colleague, sister, or friend, I have to be able to have sympathy not only for others, but also for myself and my own circumstances. …see more

Increasingly I feel like what holds a lot of people back is a lack of imagination and surprisingly little curiosity. In the modern age there are fewer barriers than ever to progress, it's this that holds us back.

Lifetime advice from my mentor that has always served me well: You will encounter a dead-end position, a toxic manager, a critically broken organization, a floundering company (or sometimes a combination of all these things). The litmus test for abandoning ship is very simple: 1) The smartest and most senior people are leaving 2) The work and mission become about “how do we survive” instead of “how do we grow” 3) Hiring stops and backfills/attrition are not honored 4) Management becomes adversarial, starts breaking promises, changes messaging and stops being transparent. 5) Budgets get slashed Any one of these issues in and of itself is cause for concern. Two or more are clear guidance towards the exit sign. Last, and perhaps most important: Stop romanticizing the workplace in a situation like this. Capitalism and business are a clinical game, not a fairy tale. The only things you get by holding on to hollow words and platitudes instead of evaluating hard data and listening to your gut and instincts are career setbacks, money lost, emotional damage and a bag full of empty promises. #commonsense #wisdom #lifelesson …see more

Picasso is synonymous with art; he is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He eschewed formal #training and discipline. What do, Aristotle, Darwin, Galileo, Newton, and more recently Bill Gates , Steve Jobs, Warren Buffett, Larry Page, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have in common? They are on the polymath list. What is a #Polymath anyway and could you and I, anyone become one? A polymath is defined as someone whose knowledge spans a significant number of subjects, known to draw on complex bodies of knowledge to solve specific problems. Being an avid reader could accelerate the process of learning and acquiring diverse knowledge. It is said that Bill Gates reads 50 books a year. Warren Buffet reads 5 hours a day and Oprah Winfrey credits much of her success to her reading habit. “Reading is a gateway skill that makes all other learning possible” - Barack Obama So pick up a reading habit. Big influencers lose thousands of followers when they don't post. Streamers lost thousands of subscribers when they don't go live. Often times, because of that they're losing thousands (sometimes more) of dollars. That being said, no amount of subscriptions/followers are worth compromising your mental health. Knowing when not to post is just as important as knowing when to post. Take a day off if you need it. No shame. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 …see more

Look at this stunning contrast: GameStop and AMC versus the S&P. Some will think of this as a "tail wagging the dog" phenomenon. Others will see it as a lasting power shift enabled by new platforms Yet others will think of it as the next, turbocharged stage of bubblish and distorted finance. #markets #stocks #investing #investors #centralbanks #fed #federalreserve #economy #investment #equities …see more

The thing to know about everything written about “Millennials” is : 50% you can ascribe to the timeless generic notion of “being young”. Young people have always liked music more, been more liberal, thought they cared about fairness and causes, like going out, etc etc etc 50% you can explain as “the modern world”. In the modern world people use phones a lot, they are impatient, they shop online, they have more wealth than other generations, they share experiences with others. To smash these things together is a total waste of time. To put 2.5bn people on the planet in one group is rather pointless. Let’s focus on targeting groups by something more telling. Attitudes or interests or behavior or even rural vs urban is more useful …see more

So much about life is based on assumptions. Retirement as a concept made sense in the industrial age. But in the digital age where work is more mental than physical and can be based from anywhere, why would we want to retire? Why would we want to keep earning more and save, rather than spread our income out over longer? Build a reputation and network that allow us to be free more than rich.
