I hope the next stage of the internet is about it becoming more background and supporting more things in real life and away from screens. It's interesting to see apps like Uber, Tinder, Eventbrite as enablers of "in real life" stuff, and then to see other platforms as the opposite.

I wish that all non mobile phones would be destroyed. That all phone calls required you to enter your name & 3-6 words about the nature of the call when you dialed. This would be displayed on the inbound call screen. They'd be the best form of communication we'd ever known. Without this, I find them horrible. …see more

"You don't need a great first job post-college. We're Millennials. We probably will never have the same job for more than a couple of years." I was talking to an older friend about my anxiety around graduating this May. The advice I got was a bit discouraging. While I understand my first full-time job won't make or break my career, I wondered why I, like many Millennials, was expected to probably never have a long career at a single company. Everyone loves talking about Millennials, and many of us have been fed an idea of whom we are: --> self-entitled --> tech-savvy --> job-hoppers I think some Millennials have accepted job-hopping as the only realistic option for our generation to like the work we do. I always hear: "I mean, would you actually enjoy working for the same company your whole life?" I don't know yet! But I do think we shouldn't just expect to job-hop. I hope I will, at the least, stay long enough to create real, sustainable value for the companies I serve and focus more on how much I contribute than the number of years I have spent at a company. The digital age has led us astray. We've worried about the wrong things. We've been whipped up into a frenzy to be concerned our personal information being taken by tech giants and about the loss of privacy that comes from it. We should have been far more worried about algorithmic news feeds, democratized media creation, and the underlying business model of media that assumes we should pay with out attention, then sanity, not with our money. One will try to sell you a posh toaster because you've bought a posh kettle. The other will queue up a playlist of extremist videos on YouTube because of one slightly errant search, create a planet that is divided forever, lead to disastrous populist governments with inept sociopathic leaders, propagate fear, distrust, anger and ignorance. Set us back centuries in inequality and progress create enduring misery. Let' fix that before we're too concerned with the toaster ads. …see more
All companies have to elevate the role of "IT". For too long decent laptops, software, systems have somehow been seen as a cost center, not a lever for growth or an investment to maximize. At the (very very) least decent laptops, tablets, video conferencing, mobile phones, sensible software, proper support isn't a luxury, is absolutely essential for modern working. At worst it's a multiplier effect for productivity, but it's even more likely to be a way to ensure you attract and retain the best staff, operate in wildly better ways, and transform your company. Those who see these things as something related to procurement and cap ex are in for a shock. …see more
Pretty amazing that WeWork is worth $20bn. It's an amazing company, but it's essentially the holder of a lot of leases and a brand and nothing else. These thin companies that own nothing and exist on the promise of user growth and "tech credentials" scare me. …see more
