"You don't need a great first job post-college. We're Millennials. We probably will never have the same job for more than a couple of years." I was talking to an older friend about my anxiety around graduating this May. The advice I got was a bit discouraging. While I understand my first full-time job won't make or break my career, I wondered why I, like many Millennials, was expected to probably never have a long career at a single company. Everyone loves talking about Millennials, and many of us have been fed an idea of whom we are: --> self-entitled --> tech-savvy --> job-hoppers I think some Millennials have accepted job-hopping as the only realistic option for our generation to like the work we do. I always hear: "I mean, would you actually enjoy working for the same company your whole life?" I don't know yet! But I do think we shouldn't just expect to job-hop. I hope I will, at the least, stay long enough to create real, sustainable value for the companies I serve and focus more on how much I contribute than the number of years I have spent at a company.
