I wish more people understood this 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 Story is everything. In the 60s a Harvard Psychologist, Robert Rosenthal, approached a school in California. Basically saying, “hey, I have this test I can give your students to help you identify which students are special.” The kids were then separated into two groups “average” and “special”. A year went by and the test was incredibly accurate. The “special” group blew the other group out of the water in everything from: test scores, curiosity, happiness, etc. Even the teachers were happier. The thing is, that test was 100% bullshit and the students were chosen at random. So 1). A good story can help sell anything. And 2). Pay attention to the narratives that you’re telling yourself. Because stories have the power to create reality. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 #entrepreneurship #marketing …see more

One of the most unfair things about the battle between legacy businesses & startups isn’t the different cost bases, but market expectations. One has to deliver quarter on quarter profit increases, the other can spank someone else’s cash on user acquisition until bought. When we say "why didn't P&G make Dollar Shave Club?", we need to be aware that they've reduced the profitability in a sector, while making losses each and every year.  Many startups business goals is to be sufficiently irritating for long enough to be bought by a frustrated incumbent. …see more

Awkward and nervous. I was asked to speak at the National Speakers Association of Wisconsin... And there was nothing more intimidating than presenting in a room filled with professional speakers! You see, at a recent keynote, I recieved my first negative review that said... "She's a bit too much." It hit me like a knife to the heart. This person didn't like the energy I brought. Would I have to pretend to be someone else? Dilute my essence? Quiet down and step back? After already committing to this engagement, I had to do something... So I hired a consultant to master the art of delivery and combat imposter syndrome. What an impact we made!!! Jacy "I-milk-cows-on-skis" Imilkowski (she/her) is IN-CRED-I-BLE! If you feel weak in one area, ask for help. Hire a professional or reach out to a mentor. What are you working on? Are you learning from the pros? Thank you Susan Young , Cheri Neal and Roger Wolkoff at the National Speakers Association for bringing me in to talk about the new era of social media! #professionalgrowth #education #socialmedia #chantelshares …see more

Finally had time this weekend to sit down & begin reviewing for my TEDx Talk coming up in two weeks. I also officially finished my first week with SelfScore this past Friday. Thought it'd be a great time to do a brief reflection of the week so far on my transition from Fortune 500 to the startup space. Earlier this year, instead of coming up with NY's resolutions I developed themes to live by—two of those: embracing risks & creating impact. To this end, I decided to move away from blue chip companies to develop my experience with startups, an area I've been wanting to pursue for awhile (more in a future post). I also wanted to find a startup that is purposeful while also creating a meaningful impact. I ultimately found SelfScore, a fintech startup that's dedicated to helping young people gain access to credit & financial literacy. Pumped to be heading the charge in evangelizing & designing a world class financial literacy program for such a deserving, yet underserved population. Looking forward to all the great work ahead Kalpesh Kapadia Pat Nicholson ! It's incredibly fulfilling when your career is aligned with your values & ability to make a difference. Hoping to explore this topic further in the coming month with a long-form post. More updates on TEDx coming up soon as well! …see more

One couldn't ask for more. At a fireside chat on Bandhan Bank's 2nd Anniversary in Kolkata, former RBI Governor D Subbara was at his candid best. He said farm loan waiver inflationary and not deflationary as perceived by certain quarters and the ordinance to arm RBI to intervene in bad loan solution should have a sunset clause. Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Bandhan founder, said the bank has kickstarted the IPO process. …see more

Do's and Don'ts in your job search I see a lot [!!!] of mistakes in the past few months and in this kind of arena you should be in your best shape! These mistakes cost a lot. #Don 't- Upload a LinkedIn post that says you've been looking for a job in the past 6 months and that everyone rejects you/ treats you unfairly in the hiring process. #Why ? You are your own brand! If you are a brand you should emphasize your professional skills by sharing interesting content and showing interesting projects. You can get empathy from friends but LinkedIn isn't the place for that. #What should you do instead? Ask a friend to upload a post about you as a reference or focus on side projects and show them on LinkedIn. #Don 't- Use the "Open to work" LinkedIn frame #Why - Although it seems like a cool feature, I know recruiters who say they decline to connect requests from people with the frame in order to prevent inconvenience because they do not have jobs to offer. #What should you do instead? Open the "let recruiters know you are open to new opportunity button", it's discreet and won't show up to recruiters at your company. And yes, marketing-wise it looks much better. All of this info is based on my thoughts research and experience. Feel free to share your opinion. Good luck! #Jobs #HR …see more

Remembering those times back in March of 2019 when I hitched a ride on several World Food Programme helicopters while traveling between Goma and Butembo in the Democratic Republic of Congo. I was reporting on the #Ebola outbreak response for National Geographic , and I remember people thinking how brave or crazy it was of me to accept that assignment. But once you've borne witness to the astonishing effort and selflessness of the men and women who provide humanitarian support during the world's most profound crises, that's when you learn what true courage is. Sincerest congratulations to the United Nations #worldfoodprogramme for their well-deserved #NobelPrize for Peace. #NobelPrize2020 #NobelPeacePrize #humanitarianresponse #humanitarian #humanitarianaid #foodsecurity #foodaccess #hunger #hungerheroes #globalhealth #globaldevelopment …see more
