A “tell” is a behavior that reveals someone’s true thoughts, intentions, or emotions inadvertently. The ability to read these signs can be a powerful #communication advantage in your #career ; here’s how: 1. Watch for non-verbal cues Customers with crossed arms as you’re pitching a new concept to them probably aren’t open to it. But if they maintain eye contact, lean slightly toward you, or mirror your body language, they like what you’re saying. 2. Listen for incongruence Ever had a conversation where someone said one thing, but the way they said it seemed off? Or what someone says doesn’t jive with their body language? Notice conflicting cues. 3. Read between the lines If you and your client have relaxed, conversational email exchanges that suddenly become more formal, it could be a signal that your project has gone off the rails. Have a live conversation to get a handle on what’s happening. 4. Pay attention When you pay #attention , you establish a baseline of verbal and non-verbal behaviors. When they deviate from the norm, you’ll be tipped off when something isn’t quite what it seems and have time to investigate. 5. Trust your gut Don’t underestimate your gut instinct. If your intuition is telling you something is off, there’s a good chance that it is. #leadership …see more

Robots in hospitals? Yes! At my local hospital you can find these “tugs” carrying everything from medication to lunch trays. This transportation system has saved the hospital loads of money over the years and...patients get a kick out of seeing them throughout the hospital. And guess what ? These tugs have been in this hospital for years! …see more

For LinkedIn's 15th birthday, people have been sharing their hopes and dreams at 15. When I was 15, I wanted to be a video game developer. Besides playing lots of games, most of which were “shared” with me through my 1200 baud modem, I taught myself to code in a few languages on my Apple II+, which was given to me by my parents when I was 13. I even drove out to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino from Reno, where I was visiting my sister for a few days, and was given a tour of their corporate office by one of their staff (seen standing with me in the photo). I’ll never forget seeing Steve Jobs’ BMW motorcycle (literally parked inside the front lobby, no less). #WhenIWas15 …see more

It's pretty amazing that the US Government can give out $484,000,000,000 to companies as PPP Payments with zero thought about any aspect of it. How to give it out? How to ensure it's done based on needs? How to ensure there is no fraud? It's like the worlds most random giveaway of large sums to the companies with the best lawyers and money to those who just fancy their luck. …see more

These posts about "who to follow on social media" are always the sort of grubby back end of marketing. It's rife with people who've not got proper jobs, who buy followers, who take part in the circle jerk of writing about though leadership and create their own "lists of people to follow" in an endless spiral of mutual back scrubbing. It's full of those who use #hashtags #All #Of #The #Time . And who spout easy positive platitudes all the time, because really today, anyone with a dream can make it if you hustle and #believeinyourself . If you see someone you've never heard of, who works in content marketing, lives in some small town, with 200k followers and zero retweets, you know the score. Not jealous, I seem to make it to the bottom of these lists these days and it's quite embarrassing. I wrote this a while ago about it. https://lnkd.in/dVJ5bWn …see more

The hardest thing about modern life is that there is so much good stuff to read and learn on the internet that the real world suffers in comparison. I'm not remotely proud of this opinion, it horrifies me, but it's how I feel.

I have just found the perfect quote to share with all my fellow LinkedIn sisters for #WomensHistoryMonth. It's from the sublime actress Tracee Ellis Ross, who was sharing her journey with body image and other life issues with People Magazine. “You know as a young girl, I had this woman that I dreamt of being, right? And I had her in my head and I would play around with being her in my bedroom and with certain people, but the gift of age is that you actually get to have the boldness and the courage to be that woman, to be that person and I’m experiencing it now and some of the things I’ve discovered in knowing myself is that I actually like myself,” she said. After reading her comments, it clicked. THIS is what it means to be a fully grown, proud, brave, confident woman. And I knew this former little girl who used to sit on the levee wall looking out over the Ohio River in Cairo, Illinois and dream about amazing adventures and making a difference in the world really is the woman she always dreamed she could be. Thank you, Tracee Ellis Ross, for reminding us that while it's important to honor our foremothers this month, we must always celebrate our own history. …see more
