3 years ago I bought a 55” Samsung “Frame” TV. The design was stunning, the picture incredible & the marketing sublime.I’d guess $100m was spent on launching it. The problem was that it was utterly useless. It was a TV that could only show “stationary art”. The art store features the Mona Lisa / Picasso/ nice photos, but it was absolutely impossible to get any form of art that moved- despite it being a fully fledged TV that could play Mpgs The entire point of it wasn’t to be a “Digital” Art Frame” but a “Digital Art” Frame. Something that if a single person anywhere on the project had talked to a single person in Art for 5 mins would have been clear. Digital art is about art that moves,or generative Art that can pull in data to change based on context. It’s incredibly exciting Being a pain, I spent many hours emailing people in Samsung, in marketing, in NPD, in PR and explained that it would be super easy to do a software update that allows this, it would cost nothing & would change the entire meaning and use of the product. You could even celebrate digital art in their art store and unleash a new generation of art It’s now 2021, I can proudly announce that the new Samsung Frame 55” 2021 is $2000 and has the precise same fatal flaw, & nobody ever replied to my emails …see more

The McNamara fallacy akin to: "We measure whatever can be easily measured. and ignore what cannot be measured easily" And Drucker's "what get's measured gets managed" isn't the whole scary truth. The really sad truth is the more vital something is, often the harder it is measure. beauty, happiness, design, ideas & everything core to what is transformative, is thus undervalued. Instead we find terrible proxies like time spend, effort, cost of materials, etc …see more

It’s strange how we think “screen time” is bad but we don’t quite know why or realize the complexity to it. Reading a book on a screen seems totally “nourishing” , it’s the bottomless scroll and non linear nature of digital media that seems more damaging. But most of all it’s any sort of media that perpetuates insecurity, the need for validation or that has a business model in stealing attention, which is most easily done by feeding fears or creating outrage. …see more

Make everything more simple would probably be good advice for 2019. Doing simple boring things well makes the greatest difference. Most things are distractions to avoid the painful realization that it’s that easy.

This image ( based on my quote) continues to  annoy me. 1) Bitcoin isn't anything close to a bank, in any conceivable way. 2) If it was a bank, it wouldn't be the world's largest. 3) Amazon is now the most valuable retailer. 4) Facebook increasingly helps make content and Uber now owns cars. It bothers me because the whole point of this quote was never "the internet is disrupting things" or all the other silly things people use it to show.  It was that business increasingly it's about providing  thin horizontal layers of value, especially those that sit on top of other's "stuff" and interface with people. We’re hiring! Looking for someone to help me take my speaking career to the next level & book gigs for me. Position is commision based & remote work is fine (but I would prefer someone in Milwaukee). Hit me up if you’re interested & tell me why you’d be a good fit. I’ve been able to do over 30 speaking engagements. Including VidCon, TEDx, and upcoming Inbound 2019 next month. It’s all come to me for the most part and I want to be more aggressive. Play more offense than defense. Tag someone that you think would be a great fit. Per this chart from Bloomberg Markets, the Federal Reserve's balance sheet has expanded to $6.93 trillion in the week ended May 13 -- a jump of $2.6 trillion in just 2 months. Under reasonable assumptions re existing facilities, it could easily grow by another $2-3 trillion by the end of the year. #economy #markets #fed #federalreserve …see more

At first glance, Siemens’ recent announcement re remote work doesn’t seem very exciting. But then, incoming CEO Roland Busch said this: "These changes will also be associated with a different leadership style, one that focuses on outcomes rather than on time spent at the office. We trust our employees and empower them to shape their work themselves so that they can achieve the best possible results." 1. Focus on outcomes rather than time spent in the office. 2. Trust and empower your employees. Put together, these two points make up a brilliant management strategy founded on emotional intelligence, the ability to make emotions work for you, instead of against you. Let’s examine why they're invaluable to every company. #EmotionalIntelligence #siemens #remotework #workfromhome #workfromanywhere #management #leadership #eqapplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

Feels a bit like the things that are the very best in life are linked in some way to vulnerability. I've had one of the best weeks of my life, and been quite terrified for most of it.

It's weird that almost everything sensible doesn't have a QR code on it so you can buy it wherever you see it. Online shopping is atrocious at discovery, and yet we spend our lives in hotel beds thinking they are comfy, in Airbnb's being envious of the sheets they own, in restaurants liking the chairs they have. From shoes to jeans to tables to TV's to lamps to plug adaptors to food, to shampoo to plates to candles. The world should just feel like one giant catalogue, and those who have spaces ( hotels, golf clubs, airline lounges, bars, doctors offices, etc) could feel like places to shop if inspired and could earn revenue from affiliate models. If high end hotels saw high value artwork as a revenue generator, not cost of furnishings, the world would be better :) *yes AR/ Google lens can do some of this but it's not there yet. **Yes, products change, so update links to show replacements …see more
