EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, or EQ, is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions in ourselves and others. It’s about making emotions work for you, instead of against you. Because EQ incorporates all of the soft skills we’ve explored in my #LinkedInVideo series*, I thought it fitting to be the topic of my final episode. And as a bonus to wrap up the series, I share a simple and clever tool to boost your EQ. #emotionalintelligence #EQ #leadership #business #success #professionaldevelopment #growth #softskills #career #HumansFirst #growthmindset *Links to the other videos in the comments ----- I’m a ghostwriter and speaker who helps leaders communicate and connect better. Powerful statements from Melinda Gates in this article. So many great points that she brought up. The fact that she emphasized our work systems are archaically designed for men who have supporting wives at home it’s a super important point to understand. In this day and age, with so many families having a woman/wife/Mom who’s working and more men (whether they have stay-home-wife or not) interested in participating in parenting and childcare, the mindsets and the work environments need to adjust. I also admire Melinda’s point about the fact that we don’t have “pipeline” problem for not having more women at the leadership positions, but rather we have problem retaining women at work; it’s 10x more difficult for women to balance work and life due to the false social and professional expectations. #equalrights #femaleadership #retainingwomen #womenleadership …see more

There was a church across the street from where I lived. When my heart was pounding so bad I thought I would die, in the middle of a bad investing day, I would go to church. It was always empty. I’d get as close as possible to the statue of Jesus. I would touch his leg. I would pray. I would ask for a world that made sense. I would ask to be delivered from the non-stop pain of loss I was in. I would ask and ask and only a little bit would I offer to give. . . . . #investing #writing #lifestyle #fear #entrepr …see more

Work/life balance falsely assumes that you are able to equally distribute your time, energy, and focus in both your personal and professional life. You’ll never have that perfect balance. So, stop striving for it. Instead, work toward what you can attain: a rhythm that works for you and your lifestyle. …see more

So excited to welcome Daniyal Malik to the #BeInfinity 🚀 team! I first chatted with Daniyal last year when he expressed interest in interning with me. I enjoyed our engagement a lot because of his eagerness to learn and grow. He was also one of the few people who followed up as well. Daniyal later attended an event that I hosted at Google with Mona Weng (also our guest for this week’s show!). At the end of the panel, Daniyal approached me in person to follow up and ask how he could help me with my upcoming projects. Unfortunately at the time, I didn’t have any roles open. However, that experience left a lasting impression and made him stood out among the crowd. When we were looking to expand the Zero to Infinity podcast, Daniyal was the first person I thought of. If you've applied to a job or considered just reaching out to people who inspire you and wish to work with them, take notes of Daniyal. His approach was genuine, personable, and memorable. Welcome to the team to help build out the Zero to Infinity Community, Daniyal! …see more

Recently watched Kim Malone Scott 's talk about radical candor and feedback. I'm a huge advocate of giving and receiving feedback even if it is a hard thing to do, so Kim's talk stood out to me. In her book and talk, she talked about following framework (photo). The vertical axis is "Care Personally" or how Kim called it: "giving a damn axis." The horizontal axis is "Challenge Directly" or: "willing to piss people off." The ideal quadrant to be in is radical candor where people around you, including your manager, are willing to communicate feedback directly to you because they care. The second best is obnoxious aggression, where you still get feedback, but the person giving it might not necessarily care much about you. The other two quadrants are less ideal since you won't be getting any feedback regardless if the other party cares or doesn't care about you. What are your thoughts about giving feedback? And how do you like to give or receive feedback? Comment below. …see more

It's going to be fascinating to see what happens when offices start opening up and people are first told they can come in. Then told they should try to come in. Then told they should come in. The whole point of an office is the network effects of many others being there. I don't think most companies will be very fast to let workers stay at home permanently. If you stay at home, you are now competing with all workers around the planet who can work remotely, so what happens to your London salary then? People come to the office for many reasons, some like a divide between home and work, some like the energy, some like the gossip, some like an escape from their families. We face interesting times ahead, I'm sure we'll default to something close to normal more quickly than we realize. Anyone in Asia want to comment? …see more

#Leaders need to empower others more rather than just act as solution providers. The best leaders recognize when to guide others to solve their problems and allow them the freedom to find their wings. When leading organizations or even leading teams, too often we get caught in wanting to offer solutions and #advice to those we see as struggling. But how can you support those on your #team , so they are in charge of problem-solving and building their own solutions? Can we let go enough without fearing relinquishing control? I would love to hear your personal experiences from observing leaders you admire. …see more

Before I started this newsletter it concerned me that it would be too much of a commitment for me. “I have a business to run.” And I’ve honestly found this to be very therapeutic. Like I’m talking to a group of friends that I’ve known for a very long time. This week I’ll be covering findings with the launch of my new podcast, why I wear all black (typically), a conversation I had with one of my business coaches that may be helpful to some of you, my new thoughts on speaking, and the thoughts behind an event we are collaborating on with Sam Lister and his crew. This series has been beyond fun and it's helping me discover more about myself. Appreciate you all!! #justQ #personalbranding …see more

Everyone has a unique story, but not everyone leverages its power. Properly crafted, your career story helps to differentiate you from your competitors, highlight your value, and to draw others to you. Here are three ways you can (re)tell your career story: 1. Sell your destiny, not your history. If something is no longer relevant, it's muddying your message and will confuse— or lose—your intended audience. Instead, let clarity be your friend and be ruthless about paring down your profiles to support what you want to do, not what you've done. 2. Identify your common thread(s). Even if you've had seemingly unrelated jobs in vastly different industries, you can always find a common thread (or two) that weaves together your personal and professional experiences into a compelling narrative. 3. Think like a thought leader. The savviest thought leaders stick to two fundamental personal branding concepts in telling their career stories: consistency and discipline. Maintain your "voice," look, and feel in all your communications and stick with those few areas where you have expertise. Is it time to tell—or retell—your career story? #leadership #career #growth …see more

From my book, "Choose Yourself". I still have to remember this every day: “Every time you say yes to something you don’t want to do, this will happen: you will resent people, you will do a bad job, you will have less energy for the things you were doing a good job on, you will make less money, and yet another small percentage of your life will be used up, burned up, a smoke signal to the future saying, “I did it again.” #business #growth #entrepreneurship #energy #thinking …see more

Scientific findings explain a practical reality about brain functioning: The less you try to hold in your mind at once, the better. Memory starts to degrade whenever you try to hold a group of ideas in mind. Believe it or not, the optimal number of different ideas to hold in mind at one time is no more than three or four—not the seven, ten, or twenty many of us struggle to retain at once.
