It's worrying that in business we tend to care about the metrics we can most easily measure and change. But in our personal lives it's way worse. Chasing money as a way of keeping score, "likes" as a way to feel connected, etc etc. If what really mattered in life could be quantified, we'd probably live quite different lives

I've been riding a wave of emotion ever since getting an advance copy of the February issue of Charlotte Magazine. That's because though I've had many stories and columns published in newspapers and magazines throughout my career, I've never been featured on a magazine contributors' page before. I'll share the link to my feature profile of the Number One Person on Charlotte's Top 50 Power List when it's posted on January 30th. But for now, just let me savor this wondrous reality that dreams can still come true, no matter how long you've lived or how much you've lived through …see more

I had watched the documentary ‘Jane’ a couple of years back. It chronicles the life of Jane Goodall and her dedication to making the world aware of the potential of Chimpanzees and the perils they face. I was both inspired and moved. It made me think how one person can create a large impact, one step at a time, one day at a time. Can you imagine the passion and dedication that she has! She spent more than 60 years relentlessly focused on one cause. She made a big difference to my own understanding of nature and our origins and the need to share this planet with all living things. I have just begun reading the book ‘Be Fearless: 5 Principles for a Life of Breakthroughs and Purpose’. The book lays emphasis on overcoming our fears and doing what we know is right. Each one of us is capable of making a difference. Use your fear to gather the courage to do what seems impossible in unimaginable ways. #WhatInspiresMe #InspiringPeople #Inspiration …see more

A quick story - I started an ad agency because I'm really good at managing #LinkedInAds , but after starting B2Linked I quickly realized that you have to wear a lot of hats. Especially, playing the role of Sales was daunting. Sales is definitely not my forte. I felt uncomfortable "pitching" anyone - I couldn't shake the feeling of being a used-car salesman (and still can't). Realizing my weakness in outbound sales, I treated it as a marketer and, instead, made it my job to teach, share, and provide as much value as possible. Over the last 6 years this has become a superpower for us in producing inbound leads, and I don't have to pitch anyone. It's much more comfortable for me, and in-line with my passion. #CareerChallenges In your career, when did you get handed lemons and had to make lemonade? …see more

Today is strong in A.I. in healthcare news - here’s my short summary: 1) IBM Algorithm To Tell Who’s Going To Get Alzheimer’s By Reading Their Writing The essence of it would be to be able to signal a diagnosis in advance from a type of data format that’s easy to procure: 2) Microsoft A.I. Chatbots To Revive Dead People I simply can’t consider these as good ideas. Would you care to prove me wrong? If the experience isn’t very similar to having your loved one nearby, it’s a huge disappointment. Whereas if it’s exactly so, well, that’s the ultimate uncanny valley: https://lnkd.in/e-qQGPx 3) A.I. Predicts Asymptomatic Carriers of COVID It may seem strange that an algorithm could predict how likely someone is an asymptomatic carrier of COVID, based on their movement and GPS position thanks to knowing the places of most infections. However, it’s crucial to be able to identify them, as they’re the ones spreading the virus the most efficiently (and unknowingly, of course). https://lnkd.in/eYDt9bp #themedicalfuturist …see more

The most striking aspect of this chart from The Wall Street Journal -- which puts the US GDP 4.8% Q-1 contraction in an historical context -- is that the y-axis will be re-calibrated in such a big way post in three months' time (that is, on the release of the Q-2 data) to make these changes look relatively small ... and even though they are big in absolute terms. #economy #us #growth #gdp #wsj …see more

A 6-3 Supreme Court is a heavily conservative Supreme Court. That matters (obviously). It is not a Supreme Court that suddenly—as if by magic!—no longer adheres to rule of law.

Watching Musk and company work reminds me of the Steve Jobs-led Apple, or the Howard Schultz-led Starbucks. These companies didn't sell you electronics or coffee. No one in their right mind would pay those prices when competing products sold at half the cost. No, what Jobs and Schultz sold you was a feeling. And, with all due respect to those two, Musk has them both beat--because he's selling one of the most powerful feelings of all: inspiration. #leadership #management #emotionalintelligence #EI #EQ #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

Genuine design challenge. I have 20 different devices in my apartment that use Mains adaptors like this. It's a mess and deeply inefficient. Can someone invent a better way? Another challenge to anyone can make a Smart Plug that is not absolutely massive. It's a bad joke. Bonus points to someone that can redesign the adaptor and smart plug into one unit. We've about 1 billion products in the world and most are identical and we spend $600bn trying to get people to buy parity products, there are still lots of things to invent. …see more

A day of tense reflection as the @World Health Association, @UNICEF, @USAID, the @Centers for @Disease Control and other partners gathered at #WHO offices in Butembo, #DRCongo . Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus vowed that the global coalition of partners were committed to containing and ending the latest #Ebola outbreak in DRCongo, which has claimed almost 600 lives since it began in August 2018. But all of the participants in today's briefing, including #DRC Minister of Health Dr. Oly Ilunga Kalenga, acknowledge the ongoing fear and mistrust that is fueling violent attacks against treatment centers, including one today that killed a policeman and wounded a health worker. #globalhealth #emergencyresponse #Congo #healthworkers #humanitarianresponse …see more

If you don’t plan out your day, someone else is going to eat up that time for you. To combat this, I use all four steps of the Indistractable model every single day. If I find myself struggling with a particular distraction, I use tools to reflect on internal triggers and deal with them more healthily. I plan out my schedule using time boxing to have an ideal template for what is “traction” for my day ahead. Whatever is on my schedule is “traction,” everything else is a “distraction.” I am religious about removing external triggers that don’t serve me. I adjust notifications on mobile apps to reach me only when they serve me rather than me serving them. Finally, I make pacts with myself, which starts with calling myself “Indistractable.” This is an example of an identity pact. Watch below and share how you plan to become Indistractable in the comments! #Indistractable #HumanBehavior #TimeManagement …see more

With holiday pressures and Q4 quotas to meet, let's remind ourselves that the best GIFT you can give yourself is GROWTH 🌱 My obsession with neuroscience began shortly after diagnosed with an incurable neurodegenerative disease. Because our brains are designed to prune away unused synaptic connections, our cognitive skills take a DIP after graduating from college or retiring from work. To stay sharp as a whip, CONTINUE to challenge your brain DAILY! Each time you learn something new and practice it, your brain will either change the structure of its neurons (cells)... OR increase the number of synapses between your neurons, allowing them to send and receive information FASTER! You can harness your brain’s inherent plasticity to learn new skills, build a BETTER memory, or quicken your SPEED of processing abilities, which will help to keep you sharp as you age! The book I am holding in this image is one that likely saved my life. UnFu*K Yourself written by Gary John Bishop is an excellent first step into understanding how our body works with learning, diet, and exercise that I highly suggest. 👉 Who else is obsessed with learning? 👉 What are your favorite personal growth books?!
