For 99.99999% of Human life, work was suffering. From about 1930-2015 work was supposed to be OK, quite fair, based on security & dedication (employer as a parent) From about 2015 onwards, somehow work is supposed to be meaning/enlightenment (employer as best friend). We're supposed to enjoy ourselves, feel purpose, express ourselves. It's supposed to be fair, it's supposed to be 100% safe, fun.....perhaps even quite easy? I'm not sure we've come to terms with how unusual that is, how unlikely that is, how unsustainable it is.But yet we're held account to that. Work in the pandemic has become even more human, we see into each others rooms, we see Clients kids and pets, we hope for support from each other. Our work expanded to take over our lives and identity. Clearly the very best work comes from people who are happy, treated well, connected, committed to, supported. Clearly fairness is ideal, clearly doing a job you get meaning from is perfect. Yet at the same time that Companies generally expect more from employees than ever before, they also generally offer the least commitment, the least security, the least help than ever before. It feels like there is a lot to explore & discuss when it comes to this strange mid stage, where we've not made sense of the modern world.
