Tim Cook and Jeff Bezos run two of the most valuable companies in the world. From the outside, they seem to exhibit very different personalities. But within their companies, both men are known for a fascinating practice: They each embrace the rule of awkward silence. As I've described previously, the rule of awkward silence is simple: When faced with a challenging question, instead of answering, you pause and think deeply about how you want to answer. This is no short pause; rather, it involves taking several seconds (10, 20, or longer) to think things through before responding. If you're on the receiving end--and not used to this type of communication style--it can seem very awkward. The rule of awkward silence has always been valuable. But in a world of instant gratification, it's more useful than ever. My first signing?! All jokes aside, this photo was taken last weekend during my first Coffee Round Table at Berkeley with Corey , a transfer student. I first met Corey earlier this summer when he made the initiative to reach out and drove down to South Bay for a coffee chat with me. Glad he also made it to the evolved version of that same coffee chat last weekend where learning can be done at scale! Lesson of the day for millennials and all: forget the fear and never be afraid to reach out, especially to alums, and take control of your career by learning as much as you can. I continue to practice this philosophy today with mentors and people who inspire me. ☕️ …see more

I swear 80% of the people I know are far far busier than they'd like & struggling under workload & 18% of people are out of work or underemployed. Seems like there is an easy fix here*. I'm working on a few plans. Watch this space. *not in America, in the US most out of work people are limited by what they can do because ( insanely ) healthcare and employment are bundled. …see more

Hillary Clinton is the personification of data driven marketing. Carving out surgically ever smaller niches. Trump the personification of brand advertising. Empowering a base of people to care passionately and change behavior. One takes boldness, the other a lot more money.

For #MondayMotivation , I’m daring the Universe to create another amazing week like the one I just had. For example, this selfie was taken right after a 90-minute #deeptissuemassage and right before a birthday dinner prepared by an amazing chef. The love and support that flows through my life, even during these troubled times, gives me the fuel to stay focused and keep pursuing my #dreams . You see, dreams don’t run out after you turn 50. Or 59. Or 60. Or 70. Or 80. If you’re lucky enough to have any one of those birthdays, you’ll learn that the only thing you can run out of is time. So keep the #passion , #creativity and #energy flowing. Another dawn means another shot at your #goals . #scalingnewheights #balancedlife #grateful #birthdaymonth #strength #courage #wisdom #choosejoy …see more

I'm back in the U.S., inspired, enthused and invigorated. So as I sit in the Atlanta airport awaiting one more flight, I’m reviewing my pre-trip To-Do List: Explored my 12th country on The Mamaland? Check. Interviewed a #maternalhealth Superhero and living legend? Check. Renewed my love affair with #Africa? Triple Check. And now that I’m back in the Land of Stable Internet, I’ll be posting more highlights and insights from my journey on Instagram at Rachella55, and here in LinkedIn . BTW, thanks SO MUCH, LinkedIn Fam, for all the kind support and compliments you shared about my posts while I was traveling. You keep me inspired, too! #natgeotraveller #globalhealth …see more

One year ago, I moved to the City of Charlotte , North Carolina, after spending nearly nine years living in East #Africa training and mentoring young journalists. I expected to decompress while soaking up plenty of Southern charm and hospitality, at a less than hectic pace. A month later, Charlotte made national headlines following yet another police-related shooting death. A year later, I barely recognize the country I left in 2007. And I think a lot about what home meant to me a decade ago--and what it means now. I realize that I have spent a lot of my life and career fighting to be free, committing myself only to my career passions...writing, mentoring, communicating.  No postal code, mortgage, or relationship was strong enough to tie me down. After a year back in America, too often I still find myself looking back over my shoulder, longing for the adventure and broadened horizons of expat life. But now, I think it may be time to commit...to myself, to my writing, to this #QueenCity. I'll be posting more about Charlotte here and on my new Twitter account, @RJQueenCity, because I am committed to what is best for me. Being fully and authentically in the moment. #Charlotte #NorthCarolina #Career #Commitment #Focus …see more

The glow in this shot symbolizes the halo of opportunity and excitement that exists for the future of Charlotte Magazine , as the reins pass from Editor Michael Graff to this young woman, Kristen Wile . It's one of the finest city magazines I've come across, and Kristen has the talent, energy and enthusiasm to steer it through the next phase. I'll be posting my September "Solutions" Issue feature on Affordable Housing soon. String Nguyen
4x LinkedIn Top Voice 🍗 Follow for The Trusted Guide To LinkedIn Brand Marketing 🍗 Lenovo ANZ Brand Ambassador
I worked in a 9-5 job. I hated it. I was an interior designer. One morning, I felt like I didn’t want to rock up to work. That unmotivated feeling became a series of 5 days to 5 months. I eventually jumped the cliff and ventured out to do my own thing. I went back to the creative roots. I was an artist of the streets. That’s how String came to be. I gained recognition, exhibitions, grants…. But it wasn’t sustainable. 10 years later, my superpower is brand marketing. Using the power of video and social media, I amplify my voice. Here's why I help owners and experts increase their visibility and influence online: 1. To save you time and heartaches, Avoid repeating my (many) mistakes. 2. To grow faster The more you grow, the more you can focus on what you like (and be paid for it). 3. To grow effectively It's all about systems and following the steps. I had to manually set this alone. That’s why I set up a membership programme, The Trusted Circle. It’s to leverage those 3 key reasons. Be the trusted voice in your industry. Look at Darren Krakowiak He was a corporate warrior and is now a CRE leadership coach. Look at Diana Nguyen She's leveraged LinkedIn to build an audience. Gained $10k to publish her webseries. #stringtheory on #personalbranding …see more

Dennis Yu is the greatest gift giver out there. Period. Without warning, I get a package. I open it up to find socks (really good quality ones - not cheapy) with my face on them :) This was my reaction. My wife's was even better. I'm not quite comfortable enough to wear socks with my face on them in public, but maybe I can work my way up to it :) Thanks Dennis - this is just as cool as it is hilarious! …see more

During the #socialdistancing , I was drawn to my best companion, books! I read 12 books in the last couple of months (thanks to my Audible) and walked for miles every day, another activity that makes me calm and gets me to my zone. I thought to share the list of these books with you to inspire you to use this #quarantine time to read, learn, and get into your performance and productivity zone. Out of these 12 books my favorites were: 1) Originals by Adam Grant 2) Trillion Dollar Coach - Bill Campbell's Leadership Style 3) Trailblazer by Marc Benioff 4) Power Up by Magdalena Yesil 5) The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg Anyone else read any of these books? What was your thought? Any other good books that you want to add to this list? Please share your thoughts. #inspiration #books #bookrecommendation #leadership #businessinsight #businessbooks #powerofmind #positivethinking …see more
