I followed the Theranos story from the beginning. I wrote about them in 2015 saying that they would decide the fate of medical innovation for some time. If they fail because they lied about their technology, it will doom investors' trust for long. If they succeed, they will rewrite the rule of healthcare. Still, Bad Blood turned out to be one of (if not) the best non-fiction books I've ever read. Literally, you can't put this book down. It's like Stephen King wrote about digital health. A very dark story that works as a cautionary tale for all of us. Some things that marked this experience: 1) in digital health you are worth nothing without evidence-based background, 2) if something seems too good to be true, be vigilant, and 3) human decency must remain at the core of what represents us even when we are about to make a huge contribution to healthcare. If you read it, what did you learn? #theranos #badblood #book #reading #healthcare #digitalhealth …see more

A few charts from the just released update of the IMF's World Economic Outlook (WEO). The upward revision in global growth is due to advanced countries and, to a lesser extent, China. It's a worse outlook for developing economies. Not sure how long the better forecasts for Europe will hold. https://lnkd.in/gxGRUvC #imf #worldbank #economy #markets …see more

Meanwhile, the difficult start of the week for stocks in Asia and Europe is putting pressures on US stock futures which are down 1.2-1.7%. Consistent with this, government bond yields are down, the VIX is higher, the dollar is stronger but gold is weaker. The proximate cause is greater economic and policy uncertainty, accentuated by developments over the weekend. #gold #markets #investing #bonds #stocks #economy #equities #currency #dollar #economics #fx #federalreserve #fed #inflation #centralbanks #investors #monetarypolicy #volatility …see more

With an 8th straight day of gains, the NASDAQ set a new intra-day high. The continued out-performance of Big Tech (1st chart) is not the only thing that has surprised those favoring lagging names and sectors. Also, the US continues to out-perform both Europe end emerging markets (2nd chart). #markets #stocks #nasdaq …see more

A second day of impressive gains (1- and 2-day Dow Futures charts below) poses an important question to markets: Has the bottom been formed or is this one of those counter-trend rally? The hope is for the former, but more supportive medical data are needed to make a conclusive case. With all the uncertainties on the medical side, notwithstanding encouraging news on falling inflections and deaths in most of Europe and New York, and also on the economy, I continue to feel that the up-in-quality trade is best: It allows investors to maintain a claim on the upside for markets while also protecting more versus the downside. #markets #economy #stocks #bonds #investing #investmentmanagement #selloff #volatility #equities #equities #investing #fed #currency #forex #investmentmanagement #fed #currency #centralbanks #yields #tradewar #fixedincome #investors #eurozone #ecb #liquidity …see more

So excited that I can finally announce that I’ve begun working with The Aspen Institute and the Aetna, a CVS Health Company ’ Foundation on their new #HealthyCommunities Fellowship Program. The six Community Leaders from around the U.S. include advocates for criminal justice reform and Native American women’s rights, health systems researchers, reproductive health champions and government leaders working with underserved communities. They’ll participate in a year-long program designed to sharpen and amplify their messages through public speaking, writing and networking. I’ll be supporting the fellows in their goal of writing and publishing Op-Ed columns. Guess I’ve come full circle from that first Newsweek “My Turn” column I wrote back in December of 1982! We’ve all been there: that awful moment when we realize we’ve screwed up. The best thing you can do when you make a mistake is to be accountable and own it immediately. Here’s why: You’ll avoid misunderstandings. You can have clear and open communication about what went wrong and why, and diffuse any possible miscommunication. It demonstrates your vulnerability—and strength. It takes courage to admit when you’ve screwed up and face possible judgment and ridicule. Insecure leaders try to cover up their mistakes; confident leaders aren’t afraid to own them. By acknowledging your mistakes, you’ll learn from them instead of repeating them. The finest leaders view a “failure” as an opportunity to learn something new. They understand that they’re doomed to repeat a mistake and can’t learn from it unless they first acknowledge it. It showcases your true #leadership colors. Taking responsibility sends a clear message about your character, integrity, and authenticity. You demonstrate intellectual humility, the willingness to recognize that what you think and believe might be wrong. It signals to others that you’re human—and they can be, too. Owning up to your shortcomings signals that yours is an open and collaborative culture in which it’s okay to be imperfectly human. …see more

Talk about Service Recovery! What we all can learn from this flight crew. Flying on Southwest to Seattle but got grounded before we could take off. The Captain—a woman(!) who is taking the photo—offered to let people sit in the cockpit with the First Officer, while we were waiting to be cleared for takeoff. What a treat. It made everyone on the plane feel happier about the delay because of the opportunity to do something special-get a picture inside the cockpit. Well done! What a great way to turn-around a disappointing situation. Kudos. …see more

Step Right Up and Get Your Healthcare at....The Airport!! That's right--the traditional 'doctor's office' is so outdated now, that you can get all of your primary care needs at retail clinics, pharmacies, airports... And my guess? Good quality of care is delivered at these 'out-posts.'  Probably not the best if you need ongoing care if you have a chronic condition, but what a convenient, easy way to get flu shots, check-ups and basic care needs.  Perhaps next you can ask Nurse Advice of Alexa or your mobile phone app. Believe it or not, it's right around the corner. …see more

I hope I could persuade policy makers and leaders of healthcare institutions to start focusing on this issue today. #technology #design #healthcare #keynote #speaker #AI #artificialintelligence #digitalhealth …see more
