I've had about 6 genetic tests and have learnt a lot about myself and the future of my health. I learnt about my risks for chronic conditions, thrombosis and my chance for side effects after taking certain medications. I have also received a lot of emails from people who wanted to choose a test but didn't know how. So it was time to release the database of direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies. Any Black Mirror fans out there? Netflix recently dropped a new season over the holidays. Four of the six episodes this season touched on either artificial intelligence technology. This lined up pretty well with the recent spike in consumer interest for smart-home and digital assistant devices in 2017. Without spoiling much, I thought the season's emphasis on ethical and social responsibility surrounding AI technology was both scary and intriguing.  In one episode, online dating is augmented with machine learning to help people find their potential soulmate. I still think the primary unit of work should be the email. A well-written, clear, concise email, with clear action points. I'm sure modern life is dictated by things we get notifications about, it becomes gamified. Inbox zero, attending 5 zoom calls, filling in timesheets. Zoom has become the new presenteeism. If we worked around what we need to accomplish, it would come down to decisions we need others to make, things we need people to know, plans we need others' inputs on, dinners to meet Clients, meetings to garner trust. For most of these things, the unsung hero is the well-crafted email and collaborative documents. Let's learn to get excited and care about those again. …see more

Innovation is taking a new technology or possibility and adding it to the edge of a company. Business transformation is applying it to the center. One is far harder but is where we see exponential changes to a business. The other usually amounts to great publicity and an award.

For #ThrowbackThursday , this photo of me from eight years ago is a reminder that confidence is the best make-up a woman can own. It was taken at the Pumba Private Game Reserve and Lodge in the Eastern Cape Region of South Africa, back in the days when a bold lipstick and a kiss from the African Sun was all the foundation I needed most days. During those years, I was traveling around sub-Saharan Africa participating in conferences, organizing journalism workshops, slipping in the occasional adventure side trip--never imagining a time when just boarding an airplane could be a huge risk. These past six months of #workfromhome life during #COVID19 have forced me to reassess the meaning of "putting your best face forward." I've worn full make-up maybe twice since early April, and my sole concessions during Zoom calls are a swipe of lipgloss and a few strokes of an eyebrow pencil. These days, it's more important to be sure about what you know than to worry about how you look. That's why this picture makes me happy. It reminds me of a time when I felt strong and fearless. When the future looked bright and limitless.
