Everyone working on the projects of The Medical Futurist got together for a dinner celebrating the amazing 2018. Creative, smart and unique people who have one common vision: making patients the point-of-care. No matter if it happens by advocating for better digital health policies (see New Zealand or Canada); or by inspiring people around the world that technology is not evil (see medicalfuturist.com ), or by launching projects that bring patients and physicians closer to each other (see askmeaboutdigital.com ), we work hard to get there as soon as possible. Thank you for your support and feedback! I'm sure 2019 will bring even more stories, projects and new people to our mission. #themedicalfuturist #future #digitalhealth #innovation #design #technology #health #healthcare …see more

One of my big wishes is for 2021 is that tech minded and VC folk become obsessed with big widespread problems, not technologies. I'm not an early-stage investor, I know little about how VC really works, but seems if you solve problems and create a better world, it's probably going to work out well for you. If you dick around with Blockchain/Lidar/5G/AI/AR endlessly and hope to win big because you're surrounded by survivorship bias and assume this is the way to untold wealth, it's likely you're a c-team player just trying to cash in and you've no perspective on how unlikely this is to be. …see more
For #FlashbackFriday , that time back in July of 2007 when I had all the men in Northern #Uganda shook. Well, not all of them, and not for THAT reason. It was because I was a loud-mouthed black “Mzungu” woman who had the nerve to call herself the boss of the Internews Network Gulu radio #journalism training office. I called all the shots, I led meetings, I spoke without getting permission and I didn’t even serve tea! If I’d had even a minute to consider how much trouble that boldness could have gotten me into, I probably would have headed straight to Entebbe Airport and back to Washington, DC! But I’m proud to think that by sticking around, I showed young female journalists a new way of carrying themselves in the world. And maybe a few men looked past the funny hair and impudent attitude to see that women just might have something important to contribute after all. #Africa #gender #globaldevelopment #womenleaders #mediatraining …see more
Ahead of United Nations International Day of the Midwife on May 5th, I am thrilled to be working with superstar photojournalist Lynsey Addario on my freelance article for National Geographic. Her work is stunning, vibrant and pierces to the core of every topic she covers. Lynsey has produced some amazing work on maternal health around the world. I can't wait to pick up a copy of her The New York Times Bestseller, "It's What I Do" to get it autographed! I'll learn so much from watching her work. #photojournalism #IDM2018 #MidwivesMatter …see more
When I got the email from Kira Zalan inviting me to participate on a panel about foreign reporting at the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) fall camp, I didn't think I'd be able to attend. Kira was contacting me from Lamu, Kenya where she's been based as a freelancer the past year and a half. I was actually leaving Kenya just as she arrived. I was impressed that Kira was making the effort to attend the JAWS Fall camp from so far away, but still didn't think I'd be able to make it. Well, you just don't say "no" to a JAWdess. So here we are, in the Little Rock Airport, about to head to Hot Springs. I'm so psyched about this opportunity to reconnect with one of the most dynamic organizations I've ever belonged to. It's about mentoring. It's about women. It's about support. It's about space to discuss the issues we confront. It's JAWS. #jaws17 #JAWS #journalism #mentoring #women #JAWdessesRule …see more

Like many others, I bought a cycle during the lockdown. But I didn’t get to ride much due to a shoulder problem, also caused by the lockdown. I finally started riding recently. This morning I attempted a hill...Mount Mary for those who know Mumbai. I managed to get two-thirds of the way up, then paused to catch my breath. I decided to turn back. I thought I knew how to change gears...turns out I hadn’t quite mastered it. Not good on a steep slope...So fell on my face! Luckily, the injury is minor. And my nose is intact. My lesson - master the cycle before attempting to use in a difficult situation. The same goes for investing, or even trading. All those people who started new brokerage accounts...pls practice and master the instrument. It’s ok to lose a little to learn the lesson. …see more
Think distraction is a new problem caused by modern technology? Think again! History is littered with examples of people trying to escape distraction. In 1925, Hugo Gernsback published a design for “The Isolator”, a helmet that blocked out distractions so the wearer could focus on their work. In addition to being super creepy, The Isolator never took off because it didn’t address the root cause of distraction. Similarly, today’s tech critics advocating for abandoning digital devices are missing the point. External triggers are only part of the problem. The real problem, as I discuss in my book Indistractable, is the internal triggers that start from within us. See the link to the article in Fast Company below. …see more
While #management gurus preach expansion and new strategies when a company’s growth has stalled, Lego did the opposite. Sometimes, expanding into businesses that are non-core to your expertise, can take you to the brink of disaster. Focussing on basics is all that is needed to be able to continue growing to new heights of #success . …see more
I am so excited to be a Thrive Global contributor, an opportunity to share my science-backed stories on overcoming adversity, neuroscience, and gratitude! In my latest article, I highlight the importance of diet, neuroplasticity, and meditation in the recovery of health challenges, grief, job loss, and more... Mindset is everything. But it's up to us to build an impenetrable one. Neuroplasticity has been a big area of improvement for me... Including the ability to: 1) Re-label 2) Re-frame 3) Re-focus 4) Re-value It's a challenging brain exercise, but the payoff is extraordinary--and don't they say that nothing worth having comes easy? 😉 #Mindset #MentalHealth #Health #ChantelShares …see more

Today my Lyft driver was a total inspiration! He lost 140 lbs in 2017; he quit drinking, he got back to working out (he works out 4am to fit it into his schedule), and he reverted his Type 2 Diabetes as a result. 👌🏻👏🏻 His trigger for all these changes: his mother got really sick and asked him quit drinking and try to be healthy. He was glad to do it as he lost his Mother 9 months through these changes. What are you planning to achieve or change in 2018? Where could you find triggers that deeply matter to you? My big lifestyle change I aim to achieve is to get back to meditation. I used to do it and lost the practice due to super busy lifestyle. As someone who study and research these topics day in day out, I know getting that 10-20 minutes back for meditation every day will allow me to be more mindful, more effective, more productive, and more relaxed. I hope all of us have clear 2018 goals and work towards achieving them throughout the year. #inspiration #newyearresolution #newyeargoals #storiesworthsharing …see more

When C-level leaders of pharma companies or healthcare organizations ask me what I would do if I were them, I always say first I'd set up a patient advisory board on the highest level of decision-making in the company. How can I possibly think that it's possible to develop anything for patients without actively involving them? I don't have to tell you, I haven't made a lot of friends in the industry. In this article, we described patient design through an amazing Dutch example.
