Too many presentations have the dynamic that the people on stage know it all and the people in the audience know nothing. We need conversations not presentations. Even more important now that most things are less certain than ever.

Parachuted from the finance ministry, Reddy’s successor, D. Subbarao, responded to the global crisis follow collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008 by flooding the financial system with money and bringing down the policy rate to its historic low. Indian banks were also allowed to restructure those loans that had gone bad. It helped borrowers—affected by demand recession globally and the collapse of the exports markets—who were not in a position to pay back to the banks. India could stage a sharp, V-shaped recovery but the ultra-loose monetary policy and loan restructuring had sown the seeds of inflation and piles of bad assets. What happened next? Do you know what the number one source of workplace distraction is? It isn’t cell phones. It isn’t the email inbox. It isn’t social media. Surveys reveal that the biggest source of distraction for American workers is actually our co-workers! The people we work with can be a constant distraction, even without meaning to be! This is especially prevalent when it comes to open offices. This is why every copy of my book Indistractable comes with a piece of cardstock that you can pull out, fold into thirds, and put on your computer monitor. For as long as you need, you can signal to your coworkers that you’re busy. If you don’t plan the time for focused work, it’s not going to happen. And not only do we need to protect that time, we need to defend it. #Traction #Productivity #Indistractable …see more

I am a big fan of Dr. Seuss. Did you know -- 1. He wrote more than 60 #books 2. His books have sold more than 600 million copies 3. He used no more than 50 words in his best-selling book - Green Eggs and Ham 4. He had a huge collection of whacky hats 5. The word 'nerd' was coined by him, though there are many theories of origin A favourite book I used to read for my kids, is 'I Am Sam-I-Am', 'That Sam-I-am'! That Sam-I-am! I do not like that Sam-I-am!' from Green Eggs and Ham. Do you have any favourites of Dr. Seuss? #Storytelling #Creativity …see more

"I can't believe you got LinkedIn Campus Editor. You don't even have 500+ connections." When I first joined as a Linkedin Campus Editor in 2015, I was one of about 23 in total and the only one for my school. I remember having to fight to be taken seriously. But, things have definitely changed. USC alone now has 6 Campus Editors and 25+ people on teams expanding from this in Data & Analytics, Writing, and Multi-Media. Even only a couple years apart, #studentsonLinkedin have so many more opportunities to create content, connect with others, and thrive on the platform than I did. As a recent graduate, I already want to make sure that students know about their resources and are able to learn from the failures and successes I had in college. Huge props to the whole @SCampus Editing Team for all the work they do! They are learning from the student body what students want to read on Linkedin, creating content that helps better the campus culture, and honestly are just really intelligent and strategic students. Can’t wait to see what they create! #studentsoflinkedin #campuseditor #university …see more

Two intra-day records were set today. It's always been true, but everything today is PR. It seems a central strategy for even the largest companies. Nobody has profited more from this than Tesla. From announcing “investing” $1.5bn in Bitcoin to promising tunnels it can’t build, to cars it can’t possibly make, reality never seems to catch up with intentions that suit journalists around the world as dramatic headlines garner clicks. Long Island Iced Tea pivots from making Iced Tea to be the Long Blockchain corp & it’s stock doubles. Kodak did a double pivot, from Photography to a failed CryptoCoin to failed Vaccine maker and benefits all the way. C3 Energy changes name to C3 IOT to C3. AI to benefit from buzz around each new wave of hype cycle, and a company with slowing growth,$160m in revenue suddenly becomes ”worth” $16bn Cryptocurrencies spike on buzz & nothing else. Fundamentals or projected future cashflows replaced by believable narratives that will attract enough suckers Nikola “more of a business plan than business” becomes worth more than Ford riding the EV wave So you start to think, how real is all this? When Blackstone champions diversity When Oil companies talk about Green energy. What is real and what’s a play for headlines, fame & a stock bounce? It matters. …see more

There has never been more importance to branding. We have ever more supply, ever more choices, ever less time, and less trust. The idea that brands are dead isn’t just not true, it’s the exact opposite. In fact we live in an age where brands spread into even more facets of our lives. Miami has the Aston Martin apartments, the Missoni building, a development by Diesel, hotel companies have fast become simply brands to franchise, even personal reputations are fast being codified ( obnoxiously) as “Personal brands”. We live in a time were we need more confidence in the decisions we make. There has never been a better time to work in any part of product design, experience design, branding or advertising. …see more

My (perhaps incorrect) observation is the level of risk and the level of anxiety of Covid 19 is negatively correlated. I'm aware of many 30 year old's terrified to leave the house, scrubbing down online deliveries and food in fits of paranoia, almost all my 40 year old friends wouldn't dream of breaking rules, while the 75 year olds I know are happily shopping without masks, wondering what the fuss is about. I know many absolutely livid that their kids and kids kids futures are being destroyed. Nobody is right, nothing is known, but this is interesting. …see more

For #ThrowbackThursday, me, at an Internews Network journalism training workshop in Zaria, #Nigeria, back in 2006, I believe. During my several trips to Nigeria for Internews, people thought I looked like a member of the Fulani tribe. I was always surprised and delighted when this reclamation process occurred, when the journalists I mentored sought to usher me into their fold. It happened a lot during my decade on the Motherland. In #Kenya, I was given the Kikuyu name Nyaguthii, which means traveler. My Luo name is Atieno, one born at night (1:20 a.m., to be exact). My Kisii name is Nyaboke, or sweet as honey. My Luhya name is Vuyanzi, one who is joyful. My Maasai name was Naserian, one who brings peace. My Kamba name is Mwende, beloved. In Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia, I am Rahel, the ewe. In Juba, #SouthSudan, my Dinka name is Yar, or cow. In Kigali, #Rwanda I'm Mahirwe. That means I'm lucky. I've forgotten a few of the other names I was given during my travels in African nations, but I will never forget the way they all made me feel. Like I belonged. Like I had something important to contribute. Like I was home. #Africa …see more
