Happy International Women’s Day! There’s so much work to be done to create full equality, to close the pay gap, and to resolve gender bias. It’s an attempt every day! It’s an attitude of not giving up all the time! More power to all my sisters out there who push for what they believe in, to challenge the status quo, to struggle to balance their family obligations with high impact works, and to aim to create a better future for the next generation. Although in the Western world we’re struggling for such rights as women, unfortunately in other parts of the world millions of women are still fighting for a lot more basic rights such as not being forced to marriage at young age, being raped to save their own/their families’ lives, to go to work or to school, or being able to drive. Today, I want to invite all of us (men & women) to be more aware of our own gender bias, to acknowledge women’s ideas the same way we value those of men’s, to not harshly judge women who are wearing multiple hats in families and society by none reasonable metrics, and to reach out and donate to organizations throughout the world that support women especially those help with education and prevent domestic violence, abuse, and human trafficking. To a better & brighter future! #HappyInternationalWomensDay …see more

A Bloomberg Markets chart showing the strong performance of the NASDAQ 100. The out-performance of many NASDAQ names relative to other stocks, and of the index relative to the Dow and S&P, makes sense for reasons noted before. Given the evolving understanding of the challenges to economic re-openings, including on account of the recent street violence and looting, and the relatively flat and long recovery thereafter, the absolute level of the indices is now even more dependent on the Fed Put. #economy #markets #dow #stocks #equities #nasdaq #bloomberg …see more

The very best "self-driving car" is still less capable and safe that some of the worst ever human drivers. I think about this a lot. If you were to ask someone driving what they were doing, they wouldn't really know. They'd be driving with a mixture of data, feelings, and memory. They'd sense the person crossing the road will take longer because of their demeanor, that a branch could flt on the road because it's windy, but they'd not be able to explain why they feel that way. Self-driving cars use about 40Gbits per second, they learn from the past, they use incredibly advanced technology that we should be impressed by. We know precisely how they work. But a self-driving car can't tell the difference between a rock and a packet of crisps on the highway. Some see badly in the sun. They struggle with unmapped roads and with the snow for example. This feels for me how modern businesses are run. We love processes that seem objective, repeatable, we demand they use vast amounts of data, we don't mind that all their learning comes from that past. We care more than the process is understandable and the same & robust than the outcomes. Meanwhile the human guided by feelings, predictions, intuitions, bias, emotion, does a far better job, but in a way that can't be explained …see more
We don’t think about survivorship bias enough. It’s easy to look at Instagram or Allbirds or Bonobos and see a retrospectively informed narrative of a series of genius steps that made them win. It’s very disconcerting to think this way, but what role did luck play? How many parallel universes are there where many huge success stories today just didn’t make it. …see more

I remember reading one of Kobe's interactions on Twitter. Someone pointed out that he deleted and re-uploaded a tweet because it had a typo. He responded “#MambaMentality.” That was Kobe. When he tore his achilles tendon and came back out on the court to shoot his free-throws (he made them both). I never met him. But he was someone that I looked up to immensely and I had him on my list of people to interview.
