Unless you plan ahead, somebody else is going to tell you what to do with your time. Maybe it’s your boss, maybe it’s your kids, maybe it’s social media. In order to live with integrity and use our time productively, we have to plan ahead. I recently appeared on the Muscle For Life podcast with Mike Matthews of Legion Athletics about the following: The root causes of distraction How to “surf the urge” and supercharge your willpower The four steps to becoming indistractable And more! I’ve included a link to our discussion in the comments section. What are some ways you plan ahead? #Indistractable #Values #GrowthMindset #BehaviorScience …see more

Growing up clinically obese led me on a personal journey of fitness. Ultimately, I overcame the challenges in front of me at the time by examining the process through the lens of human behavior. I discovered that we train like experts in order to adopt amateur behaviors. A few days ago, I came across a clip of an interview I did with Tom Bilyeu on Inside Quest. We discussed breaking out of bad habits and making permanent behavioral changes in the context of fitness (and much more). The first step is to recognize what type of behavior you are trying to change. Watch the clip! 👇 👇 👇 #InsideQuest #Fitness #BehaviorChange #HumanBehavior …see more

Writing my book, Hooked (link in comments!) took years of research and immersion in the subject material. During the Fall 2012 semester, Dr. Baba Shiv and I designed and taught a class at the Stanford Graduate School of Business on the science of influencing human behavior. The following year, I partnered with Dr. Stephanie Habif to teach a similar course at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. These years of concerted research and real-world experience resulted in the creation of the Hooked Model: a four-phase process companies used to form habits. Through consecutive Hooked cycles, habit-forming products reach their ultimate goal of user engagement that is self-activated, promoting repeat usage without depending on costly advertising or spammy messaging. While I draw many examples from technology companies given my industry background, habit-forming products are everywhere—in apps, sports, movies, games, and even our jobs. The four steps of the Hooked Model provide the framework for the chapters of my book. #Hooked #InternalTriggers #ProductDesign #Teaching #Research …see more

Everyone has a unique story, but not everyone leverages its power.🔥 Properly crafted, your career story helps to differentiate you from your competitors, highlight your value, and draw others to you. 🧲 This is particularly important if you’re an aspiring or senior leader, or you’ve had a career transition such as a promotion, founding a company, or striking out on your own.💪 Once you have your story, it changes everything, including how others perceive, pay, partner with, and promote you. ✅ Is it time to tell (or maybe retell) your career story?💁🏼‍♀️ #career #personalbranding #positioning #careerstory …see more

Are you clinging to professional baggage? Let go of these items to move ahead in your #career : People and things that support your history, not your destiny Be mindful of the company you keep and the activities that you engage in, and ask yourself if they support what you want to do, not just what you’ve done. Outdated expectations Are you still clinging to plans you made for yourself (or someone else made for you) years ago? Reassess and gain clarity on what you want, drop any outdated notions, and then forge your own path. Irrelevant experience When you’re telling your career story, ruthlessly pare down your information, omitting the experience that doesn’t align with your goals and how you want others to perceive you. Comparison and envy Adjust your perspective and lose your envy by reframing it into a learning opportunity, studying the actions of your peers to learn what worked and what didn’t. Negative self-talk Words have power, especially the ones you say to yourself. By replacing self-sabotaging talk with self-affirming talk, you’ll abandon limiting beliefs and adopt a growth-focused mindset. Fear The number one barrier to success isn’t your lack of talent; it’s fear. The real damage comes from the inaction that fear enables. #careerdevelopment #leadership …see more

Highlighting the massive liquidity looking for a home, equity funds registered a record weekly inflow--$58 billion in the week ending last Wednesday (see chart below from Bloomberg). And this as many indices trade at record highs. Also, and again illustrating the liquidity phenomenon, bonds had inflows of $13 bn. #bonds #investing #economy #investment #markets #investors #bloomberg #equities …see more

I was a salesman snob. Like many people, I always looked down on the concept of “#selling.” It seemed like something lower than me. To some extent, selling appears manipulative.  I was wrong. And for the past 25 years, all I have been doing is selling. Selling products, selling services, selling businesses, selling myself. Sometimes I have been manipulative. And sometimes I’ve sold things I’ve had such passion for that I practically gave them away just to get the message out. And often, it was very much in the middle: I needed to sell something because I had to pay my bills. I wanted to make sure my family got fed. But I can say that over the past 25 years, I’ve sold hundreds of millions of dollars of stuff. That stuff being everything in Pandora’s box that I had to sell just to stay alive.  When I thought of what worked for me, here’s what I came up with:  http://bit.ly/2B1moUT …see more
