Have to admit, my colleagues at McKinsey--and I--were just as surprised as anyone else reading this headline in the Financial Times today! "In a first for the high-minded management consultancy, McKinsey is opening a retail store and flogging underwear, make-up and jewellery to customers in a Midwest shopping mall. Due to open on Friday in Mall of America, the largest US shopping centre, the outlet is designed to test the effectiveness of new technology that retailers and their advisers could deploy to keep stores relevant in the age of Amazon. Visitors to the mall in suburban Minneapolis will be able to try out gadgets including smart mirrors and software that aims to help them pick the right bra size. Cryptocurrency will be among the payment options. In the background, McKinsey will be crunching data on shopper behaviour." So why is McKinsey doing this? "McKinsey does not expect to make money from the venture, which has been branded Modern Retail Collective. Instead, it hopes data gleaned from the project will help improve its understanding of what works in retail and what does not, and so improve the quality of recommendations to clients. #retailing #retail #bigdata …see more
I spent ages writing a piece about how Marketing will change during/after Covid for a trade mag . About 1500 words in and I realized it would be better as 200 words. 1) Don't try to be precise with tone. If I see one more ad that claims to know how I think, I'll scream. The national mood doesn't exist. It varies from one locality to another, from one day to another, from one household to another. Things are less equal than ever. and more unpredictably so. Trying to latch onto the Zeitgeist is impossible, aim to be a little more vague. 2) Be agile. Things change fast (see above), the more you can control the creative after launch & the more you can change media plans, the better. Digital media is great for this, but remember digital media is TV, Podcasts, Out of Home, Radio, Magazines (but on the internet), in fact these should be the moments that dynamic placement and real-time ad creation really takeoff. 3) Trust is more vital than ever. We were wrong modern companies don't need to develop relationships with consumers or get rich data, they need to build brands. Brand building is the only proven way to succeed, it allows you to charge a premium, gain distribution, upsell, cross sell, create new products/ services, defend in a recession etc. …see more
My quarterly challenge to ask any and all of you for a Data Driven insight. I've still never seen one, yet we continue to use this phrase. It rolls off the tongue so nicely. Data supported insight, great. Data validated insight, brilliant. Data driven? show me one please.
Getting some feedback from Publishers on writing a book. Some say I don't have much of a profile or reach. What do you think? Would you be interested in a book from me? Genuine question for research not trying to prove a point.
In my latest ITWeb column “The No-BS guide to Innovation” I cover some of the frequently asked questions on this topic by organizations and their employees. The overarching cultural concept behind a Japanese tea ceremony is ichi-go ichi-e, which, roughly translated, means “one time, one place.” This phrase serves to remind its participants to cherish the gathering, for the meeting may not have the chance to be repeated. Even if the attendees met again, the dynamics would shift, and thus, the experience would never be the same. In this way, each meeting is unique and to be treasured. It’s important to note that a tea ceremony was designed to make this concept possible by asking its participants—samurai and wealthy noblemen, as well as farmers and everyday people—to come together as equals. In the tea house, no one outranks another, and everyone has something to contribute. To enter the tea house, one must leave one’s non-essentials (the samurai’s sword and helmet, for example) outside and then pass through an intentionally low opening, bowing as one does so. This physical act of leaving behind extraneous possessions and lowering your head is another reminder to be present. In our increasingly divisive and chaotic world, perhaps it’s time for all of us to embrace the ichi-go ichi-e mindset. #leadership #trust #listening #present …see more

While candor in the workplace can be valuable, not every thought should be voiced immediately (or maybe, ever), especially in an emotionally-charged situation. What should you do instead? Press the pause button. Emotionally intelligent people understand the power of taking a beat to digest and consider information before responding to it. When you give yourself a moment to pause, you prevent saying something you'll later regret. Try counting to ten in your head or even taking a short walk so you can gain clarity, and calmly decide how to proceed. Or adopt a trick author Justin Bariso learned from comedian Craig Ferguson, and get into the habit of asking yourself these three questions: Does this need to be said? Does this need to be said by me? Does this need to be said by me now? #communication #emotionalintelligence #EQ …see more
Over 50,000 copies were sold in 5 languages (Engish, Chinese, Arabic, Hungarian and Turkish). Only a few years ago it would have been hard to imagine today’s ever increasing billions of social media users; medical sensors attached to smartphones; augmented and virtual reality; supercomputers used in medical decision making; exoskeletons that allow paralyzed people to walk again; or printing out medical equipment and biomaterials in three dimensions. It would have sounded like science fiction. This list is expanding day by day. Every morning, I feel it's easy to wake up. Not because genetically I hit the jackpot or I'm just lucky, but because I use a simple smart alarm on my fitness tracker. Waking up easily and waking up with the urge to drink 5 cups of coffee might only be separated by two minutes. When the alarm woke me up with a vibration on my fitness watch, I was already in light sleep so I woke up easily ready to go. True wealth occurs when you don't have to bow down to any gatekeepers- regardless of the money involved. Money is just a by-product.
The range-bound behavior of the Emerging Markets' currency index (first chart below) masks consistent fx pressures in some countries such as #Turkey , #Argentina and, to a lesser extent, #Brazil . In turn, the continuous fx depreciation raises tricky policy trade-offs. #EM #markets #emergingmarkets #fxtrading #economy …see more

Society, parents, teachers, media teach us the scripts that control us in the US. True success comes from being a skeptic and finding OPPORTUNITY hidden in the layers of your skepticism. The US has so much abundance. And yet so many people are unhappy. In part, because of the problems caused by these "commandments" of society we take for granted. The first step is awareness. Finding the skepticism that reveals huge gaps for opportunity and entrepreneurship. #entrepreneurship #career #college #housing #charity #healthcare #voting #politics #goals …see more
