Some industries are so big, so messy, so old, so full of badly aligned incentives that you never really get deep transformation, you get patches. US Healthcare is an incredible mess, but you can have thin horizontal layers that try to help, but just act as bandaids. Oscar can be a better insurance buying app, Capsule better pharma delivery, ZocDoc better appointment making, OneMedical better PCH service, Reimbursify helps make claims for out of pocket, Blinkhealth clearer pricing on drugs, Heydoctor better telemedicine. But you put it all together and you've still left with endless form filling, lost data, zero pricing clarity, a totally kafkaesque system with terrible wastage, poor health outcomes, lost time, it's just you used slightly nicer looking apps to get there. Education is the same, we've got snazzy new tablets, to teach a curriculum based on the values and needs of Napoleonic armies. We teach answers, not how to think. Real estate is still based on ensuring pointless door openers and relationship builders to cloud any efficiency and extract their margin, before mortgage companies, insurance companies and lawyers get in the way and earn their commission. Industries need deeper, more vertical innovation and that's FAR harder than lipstick on a pig.
