Like many young professionals who grew up from underprivileged & low income backgrounds, both Jessie Salas & I had a tough time navigating our path into tech & telling our story. We're both blessed to have mentors in our lives who have helped & empowered us in our career. 😇 However, we never grew up knowing the importance of mentorship, personal branding, or sharing our story. Oftentimes, many of us are too shy or don't know how to properly tell our story of adversities & triumphs. But what if I tell you that a story not told or shaped by you will be formed by others. This was why we started SPARC (Non-Profit) last year to help young professionals approach mentorship & storytelling in a meaningful way. It's pretty strange that the people who created notifications, autoplay videos, algorithms to feed filter bubbles and normalize extreme viewpoints. Who effectively stole the content made by publishers to monetize it. Who've created a bifurcated world without a middle ground. Who make money only from outrage, jealousy and titillation. Who spend their days wondering how to get us to spend longer at screens and to click more, have somehow never really been held to account more. That one time I chatted to Gary Vee. 😇 it’s been 3 years... a lot has happened since I interviewed Gary Vaynerchuk in HK. I did 3 things to get his attention: 1. Prepare 2. Execute 3. Share My advice ... be prepared and increase your opportunity of likelihood. Quick backstory, Gary was visiting Hong Kong for the first time and was attending a conference, RISE. I happened to be there, and I was given a challenge... to interview Gary. To prepare, I tweeted him a video asking for a short interview. I predicted that Gary is avid Twitter user, while he doesn’t always responds. He consumes it to listen to his audience. Then, I camped outside the main entrance (and only door 🚪 of the conference). He said yes! It was an unbelievable rush, I used my smartphone to record the short interview. Instead of taking a selfie, the power of video is a better amplifier.
