A Bloomberg Markets illustrating the astonishing issuance of investment grade debt in the first half of the year -- essentially, a doubling in the amount of money raised and in the number of deals compared to the same period in 2019. Corporates' massive notional demand for credit was made effective by exceptional Federal Reserve policies. #debt #credit #economy #markets #Fed #federalReserve #Bloomberg …see more

The two distinguishing aspects of today's US equity market action -- (i) all three indices ending higher on the day in (ii) a relatively low volatility session after the initial moves (see chart below for the Dow as an example) -- illustrate the combined strength of the Fed Put and current market technicals ... easily overcoming the unambiguously more negative developments for both US and global economic activity. #economy #markets #stocks #stockmarkets #equitymarkets #bloomberg …see more

With today's gains, all 3 major US indices are up around 4% for the week, with some long-languishing names (e.g., banks) out-performing. Stocks are now at a 10-week high while the oil rally continues. The yield reaction remains rather muted, with the 10-year closing at 0.68%. #stocks #markets #investing #stockmarket #equities #bonds #oil #interestrates #economy #investmentmanagement #investmentmanagement #fixedincome #assetallocation #fed #fx #federalreserve #centralbanks #volatility …see more

Here's the Bloomberg home page on my phone --this as markets and politicians push the Federal Reserve to do even more. The notion of a Fed Put is not new. But, in the past ten years or so, it has evolved from a backstop for the economy to much more of a backstop for financial markets. Proponents note that the Fed operates through asset markets and, therefore, this is inevitable. Opponents point to better direct tools, together with the unintended consequences and collateral damage of over-reliance on central banks. This debate is not going away any time soon. #markets #fed #federalreserve #investing #economy #bonds #centralbanks #interestrates #equities #investmentmanagement …see more

Understandably, US markets found it hard to sidestep carnage in the oil markets: Major indices ended the session down 2.7-3.5% (the chart for the Dow is below). High yield bonds also got hit hard. The (CDX--below) spread widened to over 681 bps, or some 150 bps wider than the Fed-induced lows. #markets #bonds #stocks #bonds #stockmarket #equities #investing #economy #selloff #volatility #investmentmanagement …see more

Few wonderful personal values are as unhelpful to career success as honesty. Its also far better to care a LOT too less, than a little too much. Its far better to be too patient than too eager. It's far better to think the same and be incorrect, than to be correct but different. But it's honesty, it's saying what you actually think, it's saying the obvious vital thing that matters, but shouldn't be said, it's being true to yourself and well intentioned but vocal, these are the things likely to wreck progression. Careers are strange. Benign compliance as meritocracy. …see more

It seemed very sensible to Lockdown the world like we did at the time. But I'm amazed that we now default to keeping the economy closed, lives ruined, businesses collapsing every day, unless we find "proof that nothing bad has happened" Surely the default is for the world to be open? People should be free, able to work, able to live, unless there is ample evidence each day to keep a lockdown. Surely the burden of proof is on those who want to take away the rights we have. Obviously we are right to worry most about those perishing from starvation, dying from delayed cancer diagnosis, suicide or delayed operations. We can ponder on the medium sized issues, those who've lost livelihoods, those who are unable to see loved ones in Hospitals perish, tourist towns destroyed. But there are Billions of accumulated "small" problems. The "first world problems" that add up immeasurably. People suffering from loneliness and bad mental and physical health. Married couples unable to see each other, families trapped in different countries, kids educations suffering, entire lives on hold from uncertainty, the sense that we're all failing to feel alive and losing any sense of meaning. All all based on no evidence. …see more

Thriving in the face of ignorance and hatred is the best defense these days. It was my distinct honor to meet and interview Washington, #DC Mayor Muriel Bowser today, and I must confess, I got emotional on the way out of her office. That this accomplished, dynamic Black woman is at the helm of this great city, poised and ready to defend free speech, but vowing to rebuke violence and intolerance, gave me an enormous sense of comfort and fortitude. It reminded me that others have stared down bigger foes, and they did it for US, for this day. #BlackGirlMagic #StillIRise #NoWaysTired …see more

When we reach the point that even your neighbor talks about telemedicine, or your high school niece is about to take a genetic test, you know that digital health is ubiquitous. It's already a buzzword. But how do you know which of the digital health breakthroughs have a historical significance beyond the daily hype? Because digital health leads to way more than exciting gadgets and high-end wellness services. Digital health is a cultural transformation and since the day I started focusing my research on that, I've known that this transformation would be a great challenge. So, we thought that showing a timeline of the major milestones that led us here might help you get a clear picture about where digital health stems from and where it is going. It gives you context about the major innovations. It shows events that have a historical effect not only on digital health, but also bring about the cultural transformation we all look forward to. You also helped a great deal by recommending milestones - thanks a lot for that! After opening the infographic, enlarge it to read each landmark easily. Feel free to share - the post and your thoughts alike! #DigitalHealth #DigitalHealthTimeline #Infographic #DigitalHealthInfographic #DigitalHealthMilestones …see more
