One of the most pivotal moments in my indistractable journey doesn’t start with research papers or behavioral psychology or anything like that. It actually starts with my daughter. One afternoon, we were doing activities from a book written to help daddies and daughters bond. One exercise consisted of asking each other the following question: “If you could have any superpower, what would it be?” The second I asked the question, I felt a buzz in my pocket. A work email distracted me from the activity -- and more importantly, my daughter. To this day, I can’t tell you what she said… While she was telling me her dream superpower, I was busy staring at my phone. By the time I looked up, she had left the room. It was at this moment when I realized that I needed to be better about managing distraction. It was this moment that set me on a five year journey to uncover the roots of distraction and what eventually led me to publishing my second book: Indistractable. Want to be a domain expert? Get a day job. In order to know what to be a domain expert in, you have to get domain expertise. How do you get domain expertise? You spend a lot of time in a domain. How do you do that? You need something to drive you to get past that hump of having to catch up with the experts. That takes time. It takes time to read what others have written, to debate the things in your own mind, to note the flaws of the way you see the world so that you can see it more clearly. Don’t rush. If you trust medical professionals enough to: Follow their advice on 1) when to vaccinate kids, 2) when to take antibiotics for infections, 3) when to get surgery for a bum knee or hip or bad heart value, 4) or when and how much insulin to take for your diabetes or, 5) when to get a mammogram, or....then you gotta listen to them when they say gun violence is a major health problem that needs treatment. And if you ever (and I mean ever) seek treatment from your doctors and nurses for your health care, then you must support them in these efforts. I mean, for goodness sake, they are only trying to save your life. You should thank them for sticking out their necks into these muddy waters to help all patients...
