“There is branding — the introduction of you to others. And then there is relationship building — the interaction between you and others. What is interesting is that you can forgo the former and still be successful. You can be so good at building relationships that your interactions with others birth and sustain your brand. Conversely, you cannot sustain on branding alone. You cannot brand yourself or your business and then forgo building relationships. In the end, business is still about one person relating to another.” -Dale Carnegie sent to me by the wonderful Mike Scopino …see more

Ever since I helped organize trainings for TradeMark East Africa back in 2012, I've understood the need to not only support #womenentrepreneurs but to improve #infrastructure in African nations so that farmers can get their produce to appropriate markets. That's why this post from Mantoe Phakathi , a communications specialist from #eSwatini , is so important. I hope more countries will look to the former #Swaziland for more innovative, progressive ideas; eSwatini is also a leader in the fight to eliminate #neglectedtropicaldiseases . #globaldevelopment #agriculture #agriculturalproduction #climateadaptation …see more

This is not an ode to United Bank of India and Allahabad Bank. I am just narrating my tryst with the three Kolkata banks in early 1990s when banking was a seller's market.

I had a very interesting conversation with a small business owner about a loan she received from PayPal , via their summer pilot with Swift Financial, after banks said no. This loan made it possible for her to invest in the new tech to keep her 17-year-old luxury consignment business on top of its competitive game. Details: http://bit.ly/2vVArst …see more

How do senior professional women dress in India? Does it vary by industry? Is it ok to vary by audience and purpose? I've struggled with these questions as I moved from Australia with my navy and grey pantsuits to Singapore with sober shift dresses to India where I've embraced colour. I have grown older, of course, but also changed industry and audience focus from investment consulting to financial media, and from B2B to B2C. Does it matter? I asked Naina Lal Kidwai how she handles the inevitable comments about her dressing; she advised to learn about the weavers. What do you think? #professionalwomen #career …see more

Let's talk about what makes for great leadership... First, we have to define a term: psychological safety. Psychological safety is the belief that one will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes. Great leaders understand that fostering psychological safety is imperative to building a culture where employees are motivated to do their best work. Here are some ways to do that: #1. Emphasize to your employees that “we’re all in this together." #2. Actions are more powerful than words. If you say you’re going to do something to address an employees’ concerns, actually follow through. #3. Never penalize an employee for sharing feedback. At some point, you will almost certainly receive feedback that feels personal and painful. When you do, commit to hearing it with an open mind. #4. Practice humility. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, to say “I don’t know,” and to be vulnerable with your employees. Not only will they feel more comfortable doing the same, they will also trust you more and stay more open to learning. #5. And most importantly, model the behaviors you want to see. These steps will help create an environment where people are able to produce their best work. What would you add as #6? #Culture #Workplace …see more

Without doubt, things feel a little harder right now - some days it feels like we should just give up and leave. Like many leaders in South Africa, I am optimistic about our future. It is up to us as leaders to contribute to and collaborate on realizing our potential as South Africa and more broadly as a continent. I love this piece by Adrian Gore which he originally wrote for the World Economic Forum . It’s a call to action on us as leaders to focus on the “glass half full” and to provide the much needed “vision-based leadership” we all need right now. #TogetherNothingsImpossible #SolvingProblemsThatMatter #SouthAfrica #AfricaRising …see more

I don't want to tell you what I was doing in 2019. I want to show you. The thing that I am most proud of myself for doing while building my brand & my company is the documentation. I can go back and pinpoint what I was doing, feeling, struggling with, and how I overcame it. And not only can I help others do the same but I have a clear map of the progress that I've made. Every video/journal/photo recorded has contributed to my long-term narrative. We are all stories. And if we don't take control of our own narrative then someone else will (or no one will at all). Document everything because SHOWING is always more powerful than TELLING. Are you documenting? #justQ 🖤 📸 Brema …see more

Companies should be having two-way communication with their biggest users and advocates. When I first started as a Campus Editor at LinkedIn , the program was in its early stages. It has been amazing to see how far the program has come. Last week, we brought together the alumni and current students of the program at Linkedin SF to meet  Nirajita Banerjee  and Maya Pope-Chappell  in-person for the first time! It was great to have insight from the different teams and give feedback on the platform as some of its biggest advocates.  Shout out to all of the campus editors in attendance!
