I just gave a keynote about the future of medical innovation and radiology to Siemens. I talked about how A.I. will affect the job of radiologists and companies working on medical innovations. I also got a glimpse into how Siemens is addressing the future. They have some exciting things in their pipeline regarding A.I. algorithms and diagnostic imaging. I hope to share some of these with you soon. #design #technology #healthcare #machinelearning …see more

This morning's US economic numbers point to what's possible and what remains concerning. The June beat on retail sales is yet another indication of the economy's ability to rebound if re-openings are healthy. The mixed jobless claims point to the job loss risk that continues to face too many households ... and, with that, comes a high level of household economic insecurity. #economy #jobs #retailsales …see more

The 10 mbd oil reduction number cited this morning by President Donald Trump (CNBC headline below) is a big number indeed. But it is also far from easy to achieve. Even IF -- a big if -- Saudi Arabia and Russia were to find a face-saving way to agree on their relative shares, the overall magnitude is one that they'll find hard to swallow. And, remember, most other producers are in worse shape as demand for oil continues to plunge. #oil #markets #economy #opec #russia #saudiarabia #cnbc …see more

Some of the reasons why -- after this horridly uncertain and unsettling period -- we'll find ourselves operating in a changed landscape. Think of it as a "NEW, NEW NORMAL:" That is, a landscape that has many features of the original "new normal," but with an overlay of new ones. Hopefully, in the aftermath of their current (intense) crisis management mode, governments will react better this time around. #coronavius #economy #economics #newnormal #bopinion #bloomberg …see more

Slowly it's dawning on people that digital blurs and smashes lines in all directions and assumptions too. The moment you realize quite how much is no longer constrained, it's a feeling of being overwhelmed with the possibilities, and rather lost and untethered. If education is online, then why limit capacity, why have different schools? Why be the same hours? What new constraints do you add, synchronicity ? Cohorts? Personality types? If work is online, then why do a single Full Time job? Why have one large space to gather sometimes not many? Why pick people in the same country? What new constraints do you add to make sense of it. What is limiting your company and need not? What isn't but you need to fix in place in order to focus? Etc etc etc …see more

How is this still in the news ? Reporting on new cases while testing is expanded out as part of opening up protocols isn’t news. Seeing that case fatality rate estimates keep coming down should be and that case numbers are irrelevant. Hospitalizations ( are what matters ) and are going up in states that are opening, but almost entirely due to elective now surgeries being carried out, not Covid. Covid patients are on the decline around the country. May Day didn’t make a second wave, Memorial Day didn’t make a second wave, protests didn’t make a second wave, nor did opening schools, beaches, stores, salons, offices, lives. What every opened country around the world shows us that the media is wrong with their doom and gloom about the future. Millions of young people are losing hope about their future, suicides and depression is rocketing, kids are falling behind in schools, famines look likely in the developing world, please can the media get a conscience. In the USA what has happened is deaths have steadily plummeted, hospitals have started admitting people for necessary surgery, and we’ve got great at testing people in vast numbers. Please challenge me on this and I’ll post data points to show or I’ll happily accept where wrong …see more

Just received advance copies of my book! The main message of the book is that we need to rethink our relationship with experts, and I offer several strategies for how to keep experts on tap, not on top. To reclaim control, I suggest we need to stop blindly outsourcing our thinking to experts, but that we should not dismiss or ignore them either. I realize I'm biased, but the message feels timely and highly relevant. The global lockdowns have led to many conferences and events being cancelled or postponed. As such, I’ve had fewer opportunities to tell people about my message. If you’re able, I’d appreciate your help in two ways: 1) Pre-ordering the book (this is very helpful to me). Here’s a link: https://amzn.to/36a9y30 . 2) Sharing news of the book with friends, family, and colleagues…and encouraging them to pre-order it as well. …see more

As the majority of folks norm to the new reality of working from home, practicing #socialdistance , sanitize frequently, etc., we are all going through emotions ranging from amusement to restlessness, to anger, etc. I would just like to take a moment and recognize the Herculean efforts and sacrifices being made by first responders, hospital staff (nurses especially), retail staff, government workers, and especially our military. They don't have the luxury of working from home. They can't practice social distancing. They are literally and figuratively fighting for our lives while jeopardizing theirs, during the most uncertain and unprecedented time I've ever encountered. Thank you for everything you do. Truly humbled. #grateful …see more

A technique I’ve found particularly helpful for dealing with distraction traps is the “ten-minute rule.” If I find myself wanting to check my phone as a pacification device, I tell myself it’s fine to give in, but not right now ❌ I have to wait just ten minutes ☝️ This technique is effective at helping me deal with many potential distractions, like googling something rather than writing, eating something unhealthy when I’m bored, or watching another episode on Netflix when I’m “too tired to go to bed.” This rule allows time to do what some behavioral psychologists call “surfing the urge.” When an urge takes hold, noticing the sensations and riding them like a wave—neither pushing them away nor acting on them—helps us cope until the feelings subside. Surfing the urge, along with other techniques to bring attention to the craving, has been shown to reduce the number of cigarettes smokers consume when compared to those in a control group who didn’t use this technique. If we still want to perform the action after ten minutes of urge surfing, we’re free to do it; but that’s rarely the case. Do you have any similar techniques? 👇 #Indistractable #Psychology #Productivity …see more

Just because your phone can seemingly do everything, doesn’t mean it should. As someone who hates being late, I used to glance at my phone throughout the day, which far too often caused me to get sucked into a notification on my phone’s lock screen. The fix? I started wearing a watch again. Almost immediately, I started checking my phone less frequently. Part of being indistractable is finding the best time and place to do the things you want to do. #Indistractable #BehaviorChange #Productivity …see more

'Putting #people first' is the key to lead #transformation at an organizational level. Jim Hemerling shares five building blocks to navigate transformation. - #Inspire through purpose: Lego's purpose is to 'Inspire and develop the builders of tomorrow' by enabling more children to experience joy to play and imagine - Go all in: Rather than cutting costs, focus on initiatives that drive growth and actions that fundamentally change the way the company operates, Invest to develop leadership and talent. - Enabling people with skills and tools to achieve #success energises them and takes away overwhelming anxiousness caused by change. - Instilling a culture of continuous learning: Shifting from fixed performance mindset to growth mindset - listen, learn and bring out best in people - While being directive, leaders also need be inclusive.
