DECIDE WHICH TASKS YOU WILL NEVER DELEGATE Look at your project and task list and decide which tasks you will never delegate. Hint: they are why your company hired you, where you are the only person in the organization with the knowledge, skills, and expertise to complete the work, where your unique abilities are highlighted and/or bring you joy. …see more

IF YOU’RE A PLANNER Technology Tips: 1. Plan and designate specific time(s) to check and respond to email. For example, you could decide to check email in the morning, before lunch, after lunch, mid-afternoon, before you leave the office, and once in the evening. 2. Communicate the time(s) you check email with colleagues, managers, and direct reports, so they will know when-and when not- to expect a prompt response. Tools to Try: 1. Use AwayFind, an application that works across email platforms and will halt your daily barrage of email notifications, except for the ones that include senders and keywords you designate as urgent. …see more

Even though #America keeps breaking my heart, I'm a professional. I have work to do. I'm back in Washington, D.C., ahead of Sunday's "Alt Right" rally for groups associated with white supremacy, white nationalism and neo-Nazism. There are so many times when the political and socio-economic turmoil in America is almost overwhelming, and the frustration makes me want to book a flight and never look back. But I have an interview with the Director of D. C.'s Department Public Health Director LaQuandra Nesbitt today, and with Mayor Muriel Bowser tomorrow, for my National Geographic feature on maternal mortality. Just writing those words brings me back to the core reality that millions of people of African descent suffered and died on these shores so that one day a little black girl born in poverty in Cairo, Illinois could grow up and interview the Mayor of the nation's Capitol. So I guess if the foremothers and fathers could stand firm in the face of evil, I can, too. #Resist #Unbowed #MLK50 #StillIRise …see more

Good morning to all my #Kenya Peeps! Remember the Kenyan Alliance of Health and Science Reporters project back in 2011? Thanks to generous funding from the Wellcome Trust , I was able to coordinate week-long journalism workshops through the KEMRI - Wellcome Trust Research Programme, as well as media briefings and other health and science-related activities. Well, I’m reviving the project today, 7,500 miles away! Thursday's GDP report is virtually certain to show that the economy grew at its fastest pace on record in the third quarter. But don't be fooled: The economy is nowhere close to a full recovery. In fact, even after the third-quarter's record-setting growth, U.S. gross domestic product will probably still be 3% to 4% smaller than at the end of 2019. That's about how much the economy shrank during the entire Great Recession a decade ago. Even worse, progress is slowing. Despite the rosy-sounding numbers, growth was actually weak during most of the third quarter, and forecasters expect it to weaken further in the final three months of the year. To understand the tricky math behind third quarter growth, and why Thursday's report could be misleading, see my story in The New York Times : #economy #recession #economics #unemployment #jobs …see more

A year ago, I created the Fast Finance series to explain the most commonly used jargon that we come across every day but may not understand. I am ready to make season 2. I would love to hear feedback and suggestions - Should I make it slightly longer to explain the concept better rather than sticking to the 1-minute format? What topics/terms should I cover? Shall I give it straight or is it ok to use a bit of humour? #finance …see more

Whether you are a startup or a trillion dollar company, it is absolutely not OK to ship products you’re not proud of. This short-sighted mentality is not only destructive to employee morale, it also fuels a quick race to bankruptcy. Excellence in craftsmanship matters. So does taking professional pride in your work. And last, and most important, unless you haven’t noticed, as a general rule, customers really hate to spend money on garbage products. Build a culture of excellence, not one where being mediocre is your aspiration. And stop telling your employees that the latter is ok. It’s not. Ever. #culture #employeemorale #leadership #dobetter …see more

One thing I dislike about the “tech is addictive” argument is that it removes us from our autonomy. It treats us as if we’re incapable of making our own decisions. People aren’t idiots. They’re not puppets on a string. If people find over time that a product is not serving them, then they will stop using it. This is what human beings have always done. One of our most amazing traits is that we adapt and we adopt. This is what we have always done as a species. We have so many options, so much choice, unlimited articles to read, unlimited videos to watch, and websites to learn from that it’s a little dizzying. We are now in an adjustment period where we have to learn how to deal with all of this potential distraction. But instead of crossing our arms and blaming technology, there are some very simple things we can do to make sure that we put these technologies in their place while still getting the best of them. #Indistractable #Tech #Choice …see more

I was recently asked what my top professional / productivity life hack would be. Here’s what I’d say 👇👇👇 While it pains me to share only one, I think I would say that timeboxing has been a key ingredient in my working life. It’s helped me with everything from answering emails to finishing books. At first, blocking time out like this can seem very basic — you almost ask yourself, “That’s it? What’s so special about that?” Then, you start to see the effect it has on your productivity--and now I don’t know how I’d function without a timeboxed calendar. I discuss this at length in my recent book, Indistractable. Check out more about this topic on my blog at the link in the comments! If you like what you read, be sure to subscribe for more of my findings and writing. After reading, be sure to share your own hacks below! #Indistractable #Scheduling #TimeManagement #Productivity #LinkedInTopVoices …see more

Passion is one of those qualities you CAN’T spot in a CV. We sourcers have to spot it ourselves. Some activities suggest passion: Being active on professional forums Writing blogs or speaking in events Relevant hobbies connected to your profession And sometimes it’s just the way you talk about what you do that makes you shine. Passion is that one quality we want ALL employees to have. Figure out why you like what you do, and talk about it in interviews. Lack of passion is deal breaker. #personalbranding #linkedin #hr #hiring #career #thoughtleadership …see more

We all need inspirations. We all need role moles. We all need people in successful roles that share attributes with us in order to deeply believe what are the possibilities... Three books have had profound impact on me recently. They are stories of female founders, investors, entrepreneurs who accomplished incredible things, made impossibles possible, and pushed the boundaries in traditional industries. I highly recommend that every woman and girl (as well as every man and boy) read these books. These authors shared timeless stories of fighting for their dreams to grow, to lead, and to become industry experts in their own fields. They are stories to be inspired by for any #immigrant and anyone who wants to make a mark in #technology , #AI , #innovation , and #venturecapital . Thank you Rana el Kaliouby , Magdalena Yesil , Sonja Perkins , Mary Jane Elmore , Theresia Gouw , and Julian Guthrie for sharing your stories and paving the path forward... #girlsinstem #girlsintech #girlswhocode #girlseducation #femaleleadership #femaleleaders #femalefounders #womenintech #womeninai #womeninstem #femalevoice #alphagirls #girldecoded #powerup …see more

The latest peer-reviewed paper from The Medical Futurist Institute analysed the state of regulation over artificial intelligence-based algorithms. Using the FDA as an example, we pioneered the first open access, online database of FDA-approved A.I.-based algorithms, which the U.S.-based regulatory body should have come up with already. We also show all those cross-checked and validates algorithms in giant one infographic. #artificialintelligence #ai #aihealthcare #futureofhealthcare #healthcare #digitalhealth #fda …see more
