After a tentative start, US stocks had a strong day with some rotation out of "stay-at-home" and into re-opening names. The Dow gained 2.1% compared to the S&P's 1.3% and the NASDAQ'a 0.9%. Contributing factors included relative valuations and extrapolation from JP Morgan's earnings. #economy #markets #stocks #dow #nasdaq …see more
Good morning. Hope you had a wonderful weekend. Bolstered by continued signs of re-openings and climbing mobility, stocks are up in Europe (mostly +2%). US futures point to a +1-1.5% open; oil prices are 4-6% higher. Interestingly, gold is also up (to its highest level since 2012 -- chart below, thank you Lisa Abramovic of Bloomberg) and yields on government bonds are unchanged to lower. #gold #stocks #markets #stockmarket #bonds #economy #interestrates #yields #investing #equities #investmentmanagement #fixedincome #assetallocation #Bloomberg …see more
For the last few weeks, it has felt like investors were having to drink not from one but from three fire hoses: fundamentals (economy, corporate and health), policy (fiscal and monetary) and market technicals (buy-the-dip versus forced de-leveraging). With relative visibility on fiscal and possibly more health issues, we should learn more about technicals this week. #markets #investing #investors #stocks #bonds …see more

A business is these three parts: You have excess of X (e.g. empty car seats). Someone else wants X (e.g. someone who can’t catch a cab on a rainy day). The business is the platform in the middle that helps “B” meet “A”, handles the money transaction, handles disputes, etc. (e.g. Uber). …see more

Emotionally intelligent employees are invaluable because they help build chemistry. Great chemistry leads to great teams. And great teams do great work. But as an employer, how can you identify emotional intelligence when you see it? Look for these five things: 1. Look for "learn-it-alls." Not "know-it-alls." 2. Look for people who work on themselves. 3. Look for people who embrace the rule of awkward silence. 4. Look for relationship builders. 5. Look for those who ask great questions. Think carefully about each task and project and why you are willing to allocate time on your calendar for it. Before saying yes, ask yourself, how does this task or project support me or take me one step closer towards achieving my goal? Be vigilant with your calendar. Don’t allow tasks or projects onto your calendar that do not move you closer to your goal. Download your free copy of my 99 Productivity Essentials here: https://lnkd.in/epuxvYe …see more
Delegation is essential for high performance, but it can be challenging to let go. Trust me, I know! However, consider how much time and energy you could put towards the work that is most impactful when you allow others to shine at what they do best. …see more
START YOUR DAY WITH A REVIEW OF YOUR CURRENT PROJECTS AND TASKS Before you do any work, and while your brain is still fresh, decide on your top three priorities for the day.
USE TECHNOLOGY OR OLD FASHIONED PAPER TO REMIND YOU YOUR TO-DOS Your brain is a terrible to-do list. Do not ask it to remember, track or remind you of to dos. This needs to be outsourced to technology or old fashioned paper.

Progress depends on debate, skepticism & disagreement. We’d be better off focussing on how to manage this energy, not how to avoid it. We shoud be asking where we place this energy, where we channel it, how to orchestrate it. Companies generally die because of apathy not misplaced energy. It's easier to get fired for caring too much, than too little. It’s tiring working in a declining industry or a company going through tough times, not least people hang on to jobs by acting small, by keeping out of the way, and we cut ourselves to profit. We need to get much better at really caring, really wanting to make a difference, having opinions and unleashing the power of robust personalities, strong views, and well intentioned provocation. …see more
It's always amazing how many people think Amazon is competent. They are a retailer that can't control what they sell. Every purchase on Amazon now feels like an ordeal. If something arrives and is the size and quantity you expect, it's a miracle. They make no money, they keep focussing on speed not customer service - Has there ever been a worse retailer? https://lnkd.in/dQkxiE6 I'd love to see a move towards a clear online retailing experience. One based on the idea of a curated marketplace. With quality control, a far easier way to shop, items delivered together and more slowly. …see more
Spent a wonderful evening with Kathy Bonk, the Executive Director of the Communications Consortium Media Center and a legend in #socialjustice , #childwelfare , #womensrights and #repropductivehealth communications consulting. I've known her since I arrived in Washington, DC. back in 1994 as a reporter for the Knight Ridder Washington Bureau. Though we're both members of the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) and reconnected last weekend in Oregon, I didn't know until last night that Kathy had volunteered for Shirley Chisolm's historic U. S. Presidential campaign back in 1972. That's what I love about #JAWS and being a woman journalist: learning about all the ways we've fueled history in newsrooms and beyond. Our presence matters when the full, accurate story needs to be told. #womenleaders #womeninjournalism #womenindevelopment #womeninmedia …see more
What a pleasure for me - an amazing class! Special thanks to Savannah and Ryan for doing such a great job, and to Lori for her inspiring leadership.
I want to make one thing clear about digital distraction: We are not puppets on a string. Often, people swear that technology is more distracting than ever before -- or worse yet, they say that we're all “addicted.” But that outdated view ignores the fact that we are more powerful than the tech. Yes, there are some categories where this doesn’t apply — people who are pathologically addicted or children who may not be old enough to moderate their behaviors on their own — but the vast majority of us can learn to moderate our behavior. My goal is to give people the tools to understand how to get the best out of technology without letting it get the best of them. But first, we have to understand that technology isn't “hijacking our brains.” In the video below, I do a quick breakdown of the long history humans have had of panicking and overreacting to the arrival of innovations.
