FYI, my thoughts on what the CoronaVirus outbreak means for central banks -- present and future. The key is to also secure the peace after winning the war against a global depression, something that was not done in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. https://lnkd.in/eRZF9cn #economy #markets #bopinion #markets #economy #TheEconomist #wsj #FT #investing #investors #fed #ecb #federalreserve #centralbanks #interestrates #bonds #investmentmanagement #volatility #monetarypolicy #liquidity #eurozone …see more

As countless Americans suddenly need to balance working from home with everyday life, it's natural that they begin to feel symptoms of burnout. That's exactly why Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai decided to give his people a gift: A well-deserved day off. Pichai elaborated in a recent email to staff (first reported by CNBC): "I know many of us have been running hard non-stop for a [sic] weeks now and may be experiencing some burnout. So, I also used TGIF [a companywide meeting] as a chance to announce an official day off on May 22. "Take the time to do whatever you need to do to prioritize your well-being." At first look, it's a simple gesture. But this decision is actually a brilliant lesson in emotional intelligence, the ability to identify, understand, and manage emotions. Let's break down three reasons why. When you always follow certain patterns, other people will form expectations for you around those patterns. If you always instantly respond to texts and emails, people will expect you to do that. You need to retrain peoples’ expectations for you. The first step to do this is to establish new habits. Give yourself some space from your phone so you won’t always be tempted to respond so quickly. …see more

It's possible when this is all behind us, many Scientists, many Modelers and many Politicians and the Media become so discredited it will be much hard to fight things like Climate change in the future. What's really stood out is that incentives are massively aligned around the wrong things. Scientists need to warn of worst case scenarios to ensure their material gets funding / published and to cover their asses. Scientists who disagree are shunned. Politicians will choose the most negative predictions ( from these outlandish Scientists ) to ensure they have their asses covered & to allow them claim the greatest victory. Modelers have literally no idea about anything except code, and pull assumptions out of their arses and play with numbers to get the desired outcomes. And the media will do anything to get clicks. I wonder if we ever get a chance to see how we got this so wrong, learn from it, and move to more sensible system to help us make smart informed decisions in the future?. Meanwhile we still see bogus science in scientific journals based on methodology that wouldn't pass the smell test in a Primary School project. …see more
I don’t know how people who have any notification on their phones turned on manage. Seems like a simple step to a better chance of sanity.
I read this post about once a month. It's just crammed with takeouts. The changing world of retail, how one young person can accomplish more than a huge company, how advertising is shifting, how brands are democratic, how A-B testing works, it's all in it. https://lnkd.in/daCFn8H …see more
Got my 10,000 steps in on this grey, windy #NewYearsDay2019 by heading out to buy myself a “Gratitude Jar.” Kelley Carter and Deborah Williams both inspired me to start building a daily practice of concentrating on all the reasons I have to be grateful and positive about my life, and writing myself a daily little note about it. It you’re wondering why my jar is so big, my gut tells me my notes are going to start getting bigger and bigger..... #BecauseImHappy #AndImFeelingGood …see more
As #WorldWaterWeek draws to a close, I share these images to remind us of the critically important role women and girls play in global development. The first two are among my favorite photos from Pagak Internally Displaced Persons camp in Northern Uganda, taken during my trip there with radio reporters back in 2007 for Internews Network . The girls in the camp were literally in charge of pumping water at the boreholes. They were little Lieutenants, and nobody messed with them! Watching their frail little arms working like pistons made my heart break, but then I saw the childish giggles and the pride they had in being leaders. I love the image of the woman farmer with the hoe on her head. Women and girls perform 2/3rds of all agricultural work on the African continent, so that’s another way to connect them with water. Finally, my friend Behailu Shiferaw Mihirete ’s post for Water Aid, about the journey of 2 Ethiopian girls fetching water each day, reminds us of the barriers to education that women around the world must overcome. #WWWeek #globaldevelopment #genderequality #WASH #water #sanitation #hygiene …see more

The last step to becoming indistractable is to prevent distraction with pacts. Pacts are decisions we cement well in advance of the temptations we know might come and there are three types that can help us stay productive: effort pacts, price pacts, and identity pacts. Effort pacts are precommitments that involve increasing the amount of effort required to do something you don’t want to do. Adding additional friction forces you to ask if a distraction is really worth the extra effort. Price pacts put money on the line to help you stay productive. If you stick to your intended behavior, you keep the cash. If you get distracted, you forfeit your funds. The most powerful of all these pacts, though, is the identity pact. Your self-image has a profound impact on your behavior. By taking on a new identity, you empower yourself to make decisions based on who you believe you are. If you tell yourself you are the kind of person who is easily distracted, it becomes true. However, if you believe that you are indistractable, you empower yourself to respond healthily to whatever distractions get in your way. You aren’t somebody with a “short attention span” or an “addictive personality.” You’re indistractable! #Indistractable #BehaviorChange #Pacts …see more

7 ways to use LinkedIn to land speaking gigs 1. Add “public speaker” into your headline 2. Use magic keywords Sprinkle the word public speaker around your profile, this is your SEO 3. Spruce up your summary Event organizers want someone with an interesting story to share. 4. Build relationship with the organisers I was searching on eventbrite and noticed an event had a panel with no lineup. I reached out to the organiser I LinkedIn, and asked if I can be on the panel. 5. Ask for recommendations Get in the habit of letting organizers know after you speak that you will be sending them a recommendation request through LinkedIn. You can position the recommendation under “public speaker” position you’ve created. 6. Embed speaking video reels The point is to let them sample a little so they know they’re getting a great speaker. 7. Blog/Write about your speaking engagements Further establish your credibility and promote the event. Plus in the article you can embed a video. Getting your LinkedIn profile optimized to position yourself as a speaker can take time. It’s an but investment will pay off when it starts running on autopilot and you’re getting invites for speaking gigs while you sleep. #stringtheory on # #publicspeaking #stringstory #speaking101 …see more
“Just checking in.” ⚠️ WARNING! ⚠️ Using “just” doesn’t make you sound less aggressive; it weakens your message, dilutes its impact, and signals that you and your request aren’t very important. Here’s how to drop it: First, become more mindful of your words🧠 Scan your #emails , texts, and messages (and better yet, read them out loud). You might be shocked to learn how often that seemingly innocuous word pops up in #communication . Next, determine what you want🎯 Identify if you’re looking for a status update or trying to stay on someone’s radar—as well as the urgency— so you can craft an appropriate message. Finally, substitute new, action-oriented phrases🚀 Instead of “just checking in,” which screams “this isn’t important or timely” to your intended audience, try an equally polite but far more direct approach: “I’d love to hear how the (EVENT/PROJECT) is going/went. Could you give me a quick status update by end-of-day?” Or “Yikes! If your inbox is anything like mine, messages tend to get buried. I wanted to make sure things were still in progress. Let me know if you need any help.” By removing “just” from your #business #writing , you’ll add more power to your words and, more importantly, improve your chances of a speedy response. #leadership #career #IlluminateMe …see more
#Clarity is crucial for effective #communication , yet even when we think we’re clear, our incongruent actions can suggest otherwise. Here’s why you should say what you mean and mean what you say: Honesty promotes progress If you’re hemming & hawing on having a difficult conversation, you’re only delaying the pain—and confusion. Once you muster the courage to rip the bandaid off and say what you mean, you can start to move forward. It opens the door for new ideas—if you let it When you’re able to calmly speak your mind and then invite others to do so, listening to truly hear and understand their points of view without being defensive, you open the possibility for new ideas. Candor doesn’t have to be cruel When you consider your audience and how they’ll receive the message, you can use #empathy to deliver honest feedback in a way that will be both kind & constructive. You make it easier for others to understand you & your value Be specific about what you do and who and how you help. Niching down won’t eliminate opportunities; it enables you to attract the right ones. It inspires trust & confidence When you articulate your beliefs, you’ll feel empowered and be known as a straight-shooter with integrity who walks the talk, inspiring trust and confidence. #leadership #career …see more
